MANOA — With one swing of the bat, Kylyn Sasaki redeemed herself.

After her error in the top of the sixth inning allowed a pair of runs, the senior left fielder clutched up with the a single to centerfield that plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the frame, lifting Mililani to a thrilling 3-2 win over Maryknoll Wednesday.

Aubree Kim struck out 13 and did not allow a hit to help the second-seeded Trojans improve to 13-3 and advance into Thursday's semifinal round of the DataHouse/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Softball State Championships, where they will play Mid-Pacific in a 7 p.m. semifinal.

"This felt like a final with two big teams and two good pitchers going at it," Mililani coach Rose Antonio said. "This one came down to execution and putting the ball in play and trying to manufacture those runs. It was a great team effort."

Maryknoll took the lead in the sixth inning when Shearyna Labasan and Jerae Keli'ikoa scored on a two-out fly ball to left field off the bat of Mylee Enos that fell in and out of the glove of Sasaki.

"I think I just panicked, so that's why I dropped it," said Sasaki, who called off shortstop Jade Yadao-Vadez on the play.

That gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead, however, the Trojans had an answer in the bottom of the inning.

Karly Macadangdang and Kristen Ishii drew back-to-back walks to start the Mililani sixth and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Tori-Anne Baysa. Justine Fabella then hit a single through the right side of the Maryknoll infield to plate Macadangdang to tie it and two batters later Sasaki lined a 1-2 pitch back up the middle to plate Ishii for the eventual winning run.

"It was pretty redeeming," Sasaki said of her hit. "I just knew that my girls had my back when they got on base, so I knew that I had to get my own back and pick myself up."

Sasaki, one of five seniors on the roster, was mobbed by her teammates after the inning and again after the game's last pitch.

"I'm so happy for her," Kim said of Sasaki. "I knew that she gets really tough on herself and after that I knew she would get it back for herself and words can't describe how happy I am for her."

Kim overcame a shaky start to the game. She walked the first three batters to load the bases in the top of the first and was called for two illegal pitches in the inning.

"They said that I was stepping outside of the pitching line," said Kim, a right-hander. "I know that all the umpires look at that, but honestly, I thought I was in the line and my foot was touching the line."

After a mound visit, Kim adjusted by moving to the third-base side of the pitching rubber and was not called for another illegal pitch in the game.

"I didn't know how else to make an adjustment so I tried to move over to the right so that I would at least step a little bit closer in the line," Kim said.

Kim got the first out of the first inning on a force play at home, which left the bases loaded, but she struck out the back-to-back Spartans to get out of the jam unscathed.

"I was really proud of her and pumped that we got out of that jam," Antonio said of Kim. "Full bases, no outs and with those illegal pitches — I don't know if it was bothering her, but I think it kind of was."

Maryknoll coach John Uekawa credited Kim with buckling down.

"The tough thing about it is we had them up against the wall, but with her being called for those illegal pitches, you've got to give her a lot of credit for making that comeback," Uekawa said. "Basically what she did was got us out and we have some good hitters and she made us look silly a little bit."

Mililani got on the board in the bottom of the first. Yadao-Valdez got on base with a bunt single, stole second and moved over to third on a Maya Yoshiura sacrifice bunt. Yadao-Valdez, who is headed to UNLV next year, then scored on an infield single by Macadangdang, who finished 2 for 3 for the game.

The score held until Maryknoll scored in the top of the sixth inning. The Spartans managed eight walks off Kim, but stranded six runners on base and made two outs at home.

Labasan, who is the niece of Antonio, allowed seven hits, struck out three batters one night after throwing a no-hitter of her own in a first-round win over Pearl City tuesday. The Spartans, who finished third in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, fell to 14-5 and will play Baldwin in an 11 a.m. consolation game Thursday.

"All we wanted to do was establish a foundation and a legacy and a legacy takes years, so I think we just have to take one step at a time," Uekawa said. "Right now, we've got to be proud of what we did and as time goes on, maybe we can be a team like Mililani."

The Trojans, who won the Oahu Interscholastic Association, are the lone remaining seeded team remaining in championship contention. In other quarterfinal results Wednesday, Campbell toppled top-seeded Kamehameha 5-0, Mid-Pacific edged third-seeded Baldwin 5-4 and Leilehua routed fourth-seeded Hilo 12-3.
