WAIPAHU - Three starters accounted for nine of Campbell's 10 hits to back the five-hit pitching of Ian Kahaloa in an 8-1 win against Waipahu Monday at the Marauders' field.

The Sabers (7-0), the only unbeaten team on O'ahu, open the week as the new No. 1 team in the ScoringLive/OC 16 Power Rankings. The No. 10 Marauders (4-2) dropped to 2 1/2 games behind Campbell in the OIA Red West standings.

Kahaloa (3-0) allowed a run and five hits in six innings, raising his earned run average to 0.39. An RBI single by Dylan Sugimoto after a lead-off double by Rustin Ho in the third inning was the first run allowed by Kahaloa this season in 18 innings. It was the only inning Kahaloa allowed more than one base runner. Kahaloa's fastball hit has high as 89 mph, but sat at 84 mph, according to one scout's radar gun readings. Yet, he wasn't at his best at the outset.

"He was kind of erratic at the beginning," Campbell coach Rory Pico said. "Couldn't spot anything. He left a lot of (pitches) up. But he settled down and kind of got into a rhythm, working down. Overall, with the layoff (the rainout on Saturday), he didn't throw, I think he did OK. I'm glad he made his adjustments."

Kahaloa threw 73 pitches. "We didn't want to push him," Pico said. "He's coming off an injury (left non-pitching hand). We're just slowly getting him into game mode."

Kainoa Ganancial, a courtesy runner who scored twice in the game, pitched a perfect seventh inning to finish for Kahaloa.

What complemented Kahaloa's fastball was his off-speed pitches (curves, changes and sliders), catcher Tryzen Rene Patricio.

"His 'out' pitches were working more than it usually (does)," Patricio said.

"He's probably one of the best pitchers in the state," Waipahu first-year coach Jared Abreu said. "Definitely on the west side. His off-speed stuff, when he throws them for strikes, he's tough to hit off of."

Waipahu starting pitcher Oakland Scanlan (1-1) lasted two-plus innings and was charged with six runs and four hits, but he was victimized by two errors that accounted for four unearned runs and walked four, two of which came with the bases loaded.

The three Sabers who accounted for nine of the team's 10 hits were first baseman Dorrien Villanueva-Hermosura (3 for 4, two triples), Patricio (3 for 4, 2 RBI) and Blaze Arcano-Llacuna (3 for 3, walk). Wayne Bucao had a pinch-hit single to account for Campbell's final hit.

"They work hard," Pico said of the hitters. "They come in the off days and hit. They just work on it, so I'm not surprised to see them take good swings out there."

Campbell batted around in its four-run second inning off Scanlan. Villanuva-Hermosura led off with a triple to right-center. An out later, he scored on Patricio's single to left. Courtesy runner Ganancial stole second before Arcano-Llacuna walked. Ganancial scored on a two-base throwing error by shortstop Justin Padilla, as Arcano-Llacuna stopped at third. Zachary Recolan was robbed of a hit on a diving catch by center fielder Sugimoto, as the runners held their bases. Jobe Ibana walked to load the bases. But Scanlan also walked Dewayne Sprinkel and Keola Himan to force across the last two runs of the inning. A diving catch by left fielder Ho robbed Villanueva-Hermosura of a hit and ended the inning.

The Sabers added two in the third. Kila Kapihe was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and took second on Patricio's slow-rolling 40-foot single to third. Arcano-Llacuna's single to left scored Kapihe, as courtesy runner Ganancial stopped at second.

Scanlan was pulled for Jordan Ballesteros and was greeted by Jake Mendoza, who bunted the runners over, but reached safely when third baseman Tyler Enos mishandled the ball to load the bases. It appeared Ballesteros was going to salvage the inning when he got Recolan on a foul pop out to third and when Ibana flied out to shallow right to hold the runners, but a wild pitch scored Ganancial before Sprinkel fouled out on a pop up to first.

Waipahu got its only run in the bottom of the third. Ho led off with a double to right and scored on Sugimoto's ground single to right. But Kahaloa retired the next three batters in order and 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.

The Sabers added two in the sixth. Himan walked with one out and scored on Villanueva-Hermosura's second triple of the game. An out later, the first baseman scored on Patricio's third single of the game to make it 8-1 before Mendoza made the third out on a fly to center.

Sugimoto, the Marauders' ace, started in center field because his turn in the pitching rotation does not come up until Wednesday's start against Mililani.

"Seems like we make more mistakes when he's not pitching," Abreu said of the errors behind Scanlan. "But those are the kinds of things we can fix, the physical stuff. Hopefully, the next game, we come out to play."

Campbell's next game is Wednesday at Pearl City.
