PEARL CITY-Kaimi Paredes threw two touchdown passes and Pearl City's defense came up with two big interceptions late to hold off Waipahu, 13-8, Saturday night in Oahu Interscholastic Association White Football at Bino Neves Stadium.

The Chargers (6-1 overall, 6-0 White) are tied for first with Kaimuki (6-0) in the White. Pearl City plays Kalaheo next week before its showdown with the Bulldogs the following week.

The Marauders (5-2, 5-1) will play Kaimuki next week.

Paredes was 13 of 22 for 144 yards for Pearl City. Waipahu's Drake Yoshioka was 15 of 27 for 177 yards playing catchup.

Pearl City took a 13-6 lead at the half and the score stayed that way more of the second half. With one minute, 22 seconds left in the game, linebacker Shawnson Batungbacal intercepted Yoshioka's pass at the Pearl City 28.

The Chargers tried to run out the clock as best as possible, but on third-and-8 at their 32, RB Shawn Lopez ran toward the sideline and out of bounds with 47 seconds left. On fourth down, Waipahu blocked the punt and Pearl City wisely pushed the ball out of the end zone for a safety to pull the Marauders to 13-8 with 39 seconds left.

Kamaka warned his backs to stay in bounds.

"But he ran out of bounds," Kamaka said with a laugh. "It's the pressure of the game. They're trying to make a play."

Pearl City's free kick gave Waipahu possession at midfield with 31 seconds left. A false start penalty, an incomplete pass, and another false start penalty moved the Marauders back to their 40 on second down. After another incomplete pass by Yoshioka, Waipahu brought in receiver Matalo Fualema at QB on third down with three seconds left, but his long pass was intercepted by Justyn Dela Cruz to end the game.

"He has a little more stronger arm (than Yoshioka) and that's the reason why we put him in there for the alley-oop pass," Waipahu coach Eric Keola said.

Both teams struggled offensively in the second half, but Pearl City squandered a golden opportunity to insure its lead early in the fourth quarter. The Chargers recovered a fumble at the Waipahu 11, moved to the 4 and attempted a 21-yard field goal. But David Laranol's kick was wide left, giving Waipahu the ball at its 20.

In retrospect, Pearl City coach Kai Kamaka said he probably should've tried for the first down (it was fourth-and-3) or the TD because if the play failed, Waipahu would be backed up inside the 5, instead of starting from the 20 with the failed field goal. Didn't matter as Pearl City's defense forced Waipahu to punt.

For Waipahu, penalties were a killer, as it was called 15 times for 119 yards. On the Marauders' only scoring drive, they went 63 yards on 12 plays with no fouls with RB Gregorio Alip plunging into the end zone from the 1 to give Waipahu a short-lived 6-0 lead after the missed PAT.

Pearl City scored on its ensuing series, traveling 63 yards also, but on 10 plays with Paredes hitting Laranol on a 35-yard TD pass. Laranol's PAT gave the Chargers a 7-6 lead with no time showing on the clock to end the first quarter.

Waipahu's next series was hampered by penalties and a sack by Paul Perry that pushed the Marauders to their 2 on fourth down. Kelson Laboy returned the punt 21 yards to the Waipahu 17, but a personal foul by the Marauders put the ball at the Waipahu 8. After a four-yard gain on first down, a dead ball foul against Pearl City moved the Chargers back to the 19. Paredes overthrew Laboy on an out pattern to the left on second down, but hit him on the very same play in the same area for a 19-yard TD pass with 8:56 left in the half to make it 13-6.

"Definitely, at key situations, we had penalties that put us back," Keola said, "so our offense was always in the catch-up mode."
