'EWA BEACH - Backed by a nine-run first inning, Ian Kalahoa pitched a three-hit complete game and Campbell battered Pearl City, 12-0, Monday in  O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West baseball at the Sabers' field.

The game, which ended after the top of the fifth because of the 10-run differential mercy rule, was a makeup of Saturday's game that was called after three innings in a scoreless tie. It was two innings short of regulation so it had to be replayed from the start. Had the teams completed five innings, it would have been considered a regulation game with the result standing, even if it were a tie. Rain threatened the start of Monday's game, as the home plate and the pitcher's mound were covered by tarps before the 3:30 p.m. start, but the skies cleared and the teams avoided another postponement.

The right-handed Kahaloa retired the first nine batters he faced, netting six ground outs, a flyout to left and a lineout to third. Tanner Tokunaga broke the no-hitter with a lead-off single to center in the fourth. The other two hits Kahaloa allowed were infield singles. He walked one and struck out five, including the side in the fifth.

Kahaloa's off-speed pitches were sharp, but his fastball was inconsistent as far as command.

"Sometimes I didn't have confidence in it," Kahaloa said of his fastball. "At times, I did."

"He wasn't spotting his fastball too well, but luckily he was throwing his off-speeds for strikes," Campbell coach Rory Pico said. "If he can do that, he'll have a decent chance of keeping the batters off-balanced."

Kahaloa's preaseaon was limited because of a broken left hand (non-pitching) he sustained when he was hit by a pitch.

"He's been kind of antsy to try to come back on," Pico said."We've been monitoring him. We let him throw some pens (bullpen sessions) before we let him get back on the field."

The Sabers (2-0) sent 13 batters to the plate in their nine-run first inning, when the Chargers (1-1) committed three of their five errors. But it wasn't as if Campbell did not hit. Keola Himan had a two-run double and Tryzen Patricio added a two-run single, as did Jobe Ibana. The inning ended when Dorrien Villanueva-Hermosura lined out to left and Dewayne Sprinkel was doubled-off second.

"We haven't been hitting the ball too well," Pico said. "We had an aggressive approach. Basically, just swing at our pitch. The base hits were going to fall eventually. Today, we just got lucky."

The Sabers also stole four bases in the inning, including a double steal. Sprinkel executed a hit-and-run single when he batted the ball to the vacated right-side hole when the second baseman went to cover the bag when Ibana broke for second.

Campbell added three runs in the fourth on RBI doubles from Villanueva-Hermosura and Kainoa Ganancial, and a run-scoring ground out by Zachary Kapihe.

The teams started different starting pitchers from Saturday. Pearl City started Dane Kaneshiro and Campbell started Villanueva-Hermosura.

It was a rough outing for Pearl City starting pitcher Tyler Kushima, who lasted just a third of an inning, allowing nine runs (seven earned) and six hits before being lifted for Chevy Sumile.
