Campbell sweeps boys, girls wrestling team championships

WAHIAWA - Not to be outdone by their brothers, Campbell's girls claimed their first O'ahu Interscholastic Association wrestling team championship Saturday night at Leilehua's gym.

The Sabers got individual titles from Alicia Liemsithisak (117 pounds) and Angela Peralta (135) to help their team amass 153 points to edge runner-up McKinley by seven points.

The girls' team crown made it a complete sweep of team titles for the 'Ewa Beach school. The boys repeated as champions by tallying  214 points. Runner-up Pearl City had 185.5 points. It was Campbell's third overall title since 2010.

"First time for the girls, so we get to hang a banner for them," Campbell coach Mark Buelow said. "They've seen the boys with the success; they wanted some of their own."

The Saber girls had been diligent in turning out for voluntary morning workouts, Buelow said.

"It's optional and we had more girls show up than boys," he said. "They wanted it. They deserved it."

Campbell had six entrants in the 14 different weight classes in championship matches.

Liemsithisak defeated Castle's Kayla Guillermo, 7-1. But she was thrilled about the team title.

"I feel so accomplished because we all trained so hard," said Liemsithisak, a sophomore.

Peralta had a commanding 10-2 lead early in the third period before pinning Kapolei's Taysia Kano at 4:25 with a half-nelson.

"It feels great knowing I'm a part of (being the first Campbell girls' team champion)," Peralta said.

Campbell's boys also had six wrestlers in title matches, but only Christian Natividad won this bout, beating Wai'anae's Alika Agustin, 11-4. He had five take downs and was never threatened. All of Agustin's scoring were from escapes.

"The key for me was mental toughness," Natividad said. "Everyone's going to get tired, especially in the third period."

His teammates, Thor Kapesi Brady (195) and Toese Tia (285) were engaged in close matches, but lost. Wai'anae's Mahvan Tau beat Brady, and Pearl City's Jordan Fuamatu beat Tia, each by scores of 7-5. Even Tristan Ludiazo had a tight match the went overtime in the 220-pound weight class. But Mililani's Dayton Furuta got a take down and a three-point near fall late in the OT to win, 7-2.

In the highest-scoring title match, Kapolei's Shandon Ilabon-Totten turned his fifth reversal with one second left to beat Kaiser's Chance Ikei, 14-13.

Ikei led 11-8 entering the third period. Several penalty points and a reversal put Totten ahead, 12-11. Ikei scored a reversal with seven seconds left to regain the lead, 13-12, but six seconds later, Ilabon-Totten won it with a reversal of his own.

"It feels good," the sophomore said of the win. "I couldn't wrestle last year because I broke my ankle."

There were three defending state champions in girls' matches, but only one prevailed.

Kahuku's Aarica Barcina (109) lost in the semifinals to Leilehua's Nakia James.

Moanalua's Angela Enos (105) defeated state champion Breanne Takaesu of Pearl City, 5-1. Takaesu took a 1-0 lead with a second-period escape, but Enos scored five unanswered points to take the match.

"It was really, really relieving," Enos said. "I had lost to her at Officials (preseason meet). I felt a lot more confident and I trusted myself and my coaches a lot more."

Mililani defending state champion Angela Lee (121) found herself down 6-1 after the first period to Pearl City's Asia Lien Evans. But Lee cut her deficit with a three-point near fall in the second period to pull to within two. Then 29 seconds into the third period, she pinned Evans to complete the rally.

"I was just so pumped and amped up for this match," Lee said. "I froze up. My muscles all tensed up. I knew I had to pull something out to win."

Lee said she anticipated that Evans was going to use a throw.

"I kind of waited for it and when she threw me, I kind of reversed it, then I stuck it," Lee said. "I hung on for dear life."

All three defending boys' state champions won their OIA titles.

Mililani's Braydon Akeo (138) defeated Wai'anae's jacob Saosusuga, 14-7; Pearl City's Blake Cooper (160) pinned Campbells Francis Taua at 3:17; and Pearl City's Alex Ursua (126) pinned Moanalua's Chevy Tabiolo Felicilda at 1:48. Ursua won last year's state title in 125 while representing University High.
