KAIMUKI--Third seed Seabury Hall held off upset-minded Damien, 58-55 in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II State Basketball Championships on Thursday night at Kaimuki High School. The Spartans advance to the semifinals to play Hawaii Prep Academy on Friday night at Kalani High School at 7 pm.
Seabury Hall's Cameron King led all scorers with 26 points and made three 3-pointers. Jackson Stinger added 13 points and went 5 of 8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Kobe Ikari led Damien with 23 points and hit five 3-pointers. Jaylen Layco added 14 points and James Roy scored 13 points.
King hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to cut the deficit to one, 48-47. He tied the game up at 51 after he made a field goal from the right block. Ikari's layup gave the Monarchs a 55-51 lead. Stinger went 1 of 2 from the free throw line to make it 55-52 with 56.6 seconds remaining.
King hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to tie the game at 55. With 11.9 seconds left, Stinger hit the first free throw and missed the second. Rip Pahukoa grabbed the offensive rebound and passed it to Stinger who was fouled. He made both free throws with 8.4 seconds remaining. Layco attempted a pull up 3 in transition, but it was off the mark and Seabury's Nyck Yashiro grabbed the rebound for the victory.
The Spartans trailed for most of the game and outscored the Monarchs 25-16 in the second half.
The Spartans used a 6-1 run to start the second half and managed to outscore Damien 10-7, but they still trailed 46-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
Ikari hit a 3-pointer to give Damien a 25-24 in the second quarter. He hit three 3-pointers in the quarter. Jackson Stinger's elbow jumpshot was Seabury's first made field goal at about the 4:30 mark. The Monarchs outscored the Spartans 17-9 in the quarter to take a 39-33 lead at halftime.
It was a high-scoring quarter for both teams as each team traded baskets. Seabury Hall's Cameron King, who leads the Spartans in scoring with 21.7 points per game, scored 11 points of his 26 in the first quarter. Damien's Kobe Ikari hit a 3-pointer near the top of the arc and the Monarchs trailed 24-22. James Roy scored 10 of his 13 points, including some long jumpers.
Damien will play Kaiser at 5 pm at Kaimuki High School on Friday.
