Maryknoll used a second half surge to advance past Kailua in the opening round of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Hawaiian Airlines 38th Annual Girls Basketball Division I State Championships at Moanalua High School on Friday night.  Maryknoll, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up, moves on to play the Tournament's top-seed Lahainaluna at the Lahaina Civic Center tomorrow at 6 pm. Kailua ends their season at 9-5, (12-8 overall) and finished fourth in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Division.

"It's a first time, it's not like you're going with a day's rest and we're playing a very good team at their place with a good crowd up there and we need to play better tonight for sure. Lahainaluna comes at you and we got to be more poised and take care of the basketball and do the best we can, it's the State Tournament so you shouldn't be holding anything back," said Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado.

Maryknoll's Lexi Delovio led the team with 11 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

"We're a fast break team and I look to pass before I shoot and I dish when they're open. We played solid defense and there was a lot of communication on the court, but there were too many fouls," said Delovio.

Maryknoll got off to a 8-0 run after Lexi Delovio's 3-point play and Kailua called a timeout at 4:03. Kailua's Patria Vaimaona scored five of the team's nine points. Maryknoll took a 14-9 lead after the first quarter after Maile Goodin hit a 3-pointer from the left corner.

Kailua fought back and managed to cut the deficit to one in the second quarter after Leilani Lastimosa hit a baseline jumper to make it 16-15.

"It's been a season of growth for us and they're still learning how to play with each other. We came up a little short tonight, but they did put up a good run and everything that happened on the floor and adjusted as best as they could and that's all I could ask for is their best effort and I was happy with their effort tonight," said Kailua coach Mandy Llamedo.

However, the Spartans outscored the Surfriders 6-1 to close the quarter to take a 22-17 lead at halftime.

"We talked at halftime and looked at our shot chart and we missed eight layups. We were up five but should've been up 15. It's not executing and we got layups and we just got to finish, it's been our nemesis all year. We let teams hang around because we can't make layups or free throws," said Furtado.

Maryknoll shot 48.5 percent (16-of-33) from the field, but just shot 11.7 percent (2-of-17) from the 3-point line, but 70 percent (7-of-10) from the free throw line. Kailua struggled to make shots and shot 30.3 percent (10-of-30) from the field and 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from the free throw line.

Maryknoll got off to a 26-17 lead after Siena Shupe hit a 3-pointer near the top. Kailua's Kawehi Perry answered with a 3-pointer of her own from the left corner to make it 26-20 and Maryknoll called a timeout. Following the timeout, Maryknoll was able to break the game wide open and went up 31-22 following a long jumpshot from Shupe to prompt Kailua to call a timeout. The Spartans closed out the quarter on a 6-2 run capped by a layup from Maya Rodriguez-Chang to make it 37-24. The Spartans outscored the Surfriders 15-7 in the quarter to pull away.

"Second half I think they (Kailua) got tired and we got some breakaway layups and fast break situations where we scored so we were able to hold them off," said Furtado.

Kailua held a slight edge in rebounds as they outrebounded Maryknoll 32-28.

"I thought we fouled too much and keeping them off the offensive glass. (Taufau) Williams we let her get to the bucket and let her get offensive rebounds," said Furtado.

In the fourth quarter, Maryknoll was able to extend the lead to as much as 17 points. The Spartans outscored the Surfriders 25-16 in the second half.

Taufau Williams led Kailua with 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

"A lot of people did not think we would be here. We didn't know what we were able to accomplish, it's our first year in the Red, I don't know how long Kailua's been up or if it's the first time, but I think it's a huge accomplishment in itself and what they've been able to do this whole season," said Llamedo on her team's accomplishments throughout the season.
