Kapalama – With the regular season winding down in the ILH girls Division I basketball No. 2 Punahou established themselves as the team to beat with a 53-35 victory over No. 10 Iolani at Kekuhaupio Gym on the campus of Kamehameha Schools Kapalama.

Lighting the way to victory was a double-double performance from senior guard Keau Fey who finished with 12 points, 17 rebounds, and 7 blocks.

"I just went out there with all I had because all my teammates were cheering for me and we had a great time out there," commented Fey after the game.

"She's blossoming into her own, we're really proud with her progress and what she brings to this team," remarked Punahou head coach Kevin Velasco.

From the moment the ball was tipped, Punahou assumed the lead and never looked back, establishing a 12-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 26-10 lead into the half.

In the second half, a feisty Iolani team arose from the locker room and put forth their best offensive output of the contest in that third quarter with 13 points.

"Iolani really came out and brought that lead down and we tried to tell our kids to play with fire and energy and they did and we were able to compose ourselves," stated Velasco.

The Raiders were able to get the lead down to 15 points once in the third quarter at the 3:37 mark and again at the 4:05 mark in fourth, but the Buffanblu showed great resilience on both occasions, keeping the Raiders from getting any close thanks in large part to a 31-13 advantage on the boads.

The Raiders were led offensively by the ILH's sixth leading scorer senior Jade Botelho who ended as the game's top scorer with 15 points and two rebounds.

"Jade's a good shooter so we tried to slow her down by not getting too far away from her and leaving her for an open shot," said coach Velasco.

Iolani as a team struggled offensively, shooting just 29 percent from the field and 57  percent from the free throw line. Punahou shot 48 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line.

Guard Hailey Motooka led the Buffanblu with 13 points and two 3-pointers.

The Buffanblu were able to maintain the top spot in the ILH D1 standings with their 7-1 record while Iolani took a step back, falling to 4-4 in the ILH.

"To be honest we're still working every day and they're learning each other now and they're learning they can trust each other," commented Velasco on the team's progress this season. "The ILH is so tough if you rest you're dead we have to get ready for every week."
