Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week
Maryknoll puts perfect record on the line against Punahou

The two top-ranked teams in the ScoringLive/OC16 Boys Basketball Power Rankings will face off Friday when No. 1 Punahou crosses Wilder Avenue for a pivotal Interscholastic League of Honolulu first-round game at second-ranked Maryknoll.

Both teams played on Wednesday night will differing results. The Buffanblu were upset at home by No. 3 'Iolani, 46-34, while the Spartans easily handled No. 7 Kamehameha, 53-32.

It was the first loss of the season for Punahou (18-1 overall, 3-1 ILH), which fell into a tie with 'Iolani for second place in the league's Division I standings. Both teams are now one game behind Maryknoll (17-2, 4-0).

To make matters worse for the Buffanblu, standout post player Daniel Andrews went down in warm-ups Wednesday with an apparent knee injury. Andrews, who is the seventh-leading scorer in the ILH D1, was taken to the locker room before the game started and returned to watch the second half from the bench, but was limping noticeably. His status for Friday's game is unclear.

Without Andrews, the Buffanblu were held to a regular-season low 34 points. No player scored more than seven points and Punahou shot just 26.7 percent from the field and 35.7 percent (5 of 14) from the free-throw line. 'Iolani outrebounded its rivals by a margin of 32 to 23 and shot 45.5 percent from the field.

Justin Kam scored a team-high seven points, Dayson Watanabe added six and Micah Maa five. Blake Wade grabbed nine rebounds. Kam averages 14.3 points per game, which ties him for fifth most in the ILH.

Meanwhile, Maryknoll had no problems with Kamehameha Wednesday. Josh Burnett scored 11 points, Kaleb Gilmore 10 and Sean Ogata and Kamakana Windquist added eight apiece. The teams were tied at 10 after the first quarter, but Maryknoll outscored Kamehameha, 30 to 11, in the second and third quarters.

Burnett, who leads the ILH in scoring (22.0 ppg), has led the Spartans in scoring in three of their four league games. Gilmore, who scored a season-high 30 points in a win over Iolani last week, ranks just behind his teammate with a 20.0 points per game average. The dynamic duo are responsible for more than 61 percent of Maryknoll's average offensive output of 68.5 points, which leads the ILH. Punahou ranks second at 61.5 points scored per game.

The teams will play again on Feb. 1 in a second-round game at the Buffanblu's Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

Tipoff Friday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium.
