Lahainaluna handed fourth-ranked Baldwin their first loss in Maui Interscholastic League regular season play, 38-37, at Baldwin High School on Saturday night.

Josh Chapital and Ryan Madera led the Lunas with 9 points each. Chapital had 5 big points in the fourth quarter, including a driving layup in traffic to put the Lunas up by one with 10 seconds left in the game.

Lahainaluna sat in a 2-3 zone most of the game and got Baldwin into foul trouble early. Teva Eldridge picked up 2 quick fouls in the first quarter and sat the enitre second quarter. Kody Takushi, Niko Corpin and Josiah Magalente all picked their second fouls prior to halftime.

Despite most of their starters saddled with foul trouble in the second, Baldwin outscored Lahaina 10 to 7 in the second quarter and trimmed the lead to just three on a Ryan Garces steal just prior to the intermission.

Garces picked up where he left off in the third, scoring 9 of his 15 points in the quarter, including a layup ignited by a steal by Kody Takushi with 4 minutes left in the third quarter gave the Bears their first lead of the game, 22-21.

Then, with Lunas down 27-24 with 30 seconds left in the third quarter, Lahainaluna played for the final shot of the period and eventually got the ball to Chapital, who hit a 15 foot jump sho to put Lahaina behind by just one at 27-26.

Baldwin continued to cling to the lead in the fourth, and with 2:15 left in regulation, Jeremiah Badillo made a layup to put Baldwin up by 6. Chapital hit another three for the Lunas with 1:15 left to keep thing close.

In the game’s final minute, free throws played a big role in the outcome. With 39 seconds left and the Lunas down 37-34, the Bears missed four consecutive from the line to keep Lahainaluna in it.

Highlighted by Madera’s clutch pair of free throws to bring the lead to 1 prior to the game winner by Chapital, the Lunas converted 7-of-10 from the line down the stretch to eke out the win, and shot well from the free throw line throughout, hitting 19-of-27 attempts.

Nick Vierra finished with 7 points, with all of his scoring coming from the line.

Baldwin had one last chance but a 3 from the top of the key by Badillo was no good.

Garces led Baldwin with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals, and Eldridge added 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Lahainaluna hosts Maui High on January 15 while Baldwin takes on Kamehameha-Maui at home on January 16th.
