Farrington, No. 6 in the ScoringLive/OC16 Boys Basketball Power Rankings, remained unbeaten at 4-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East after knocking off Roosevelt, 61-49 at Roosevelt on Friday night.
Isaiah Visoria led the Governors with 15 points and shot 70 percent (7 of 10) from the free throw line. Jacob McEnroe added 12 points and five rebounds and a block.
"We were trying to keep our composure and tried to play together. We just tried not to foul and although we didn't get the calls, we played through it," said Visoria, on pressuring the Rough Riders defensively.
The Governors used their size and outrebounded a smaller Roosevelt squad 28-13, led by Van Hugo and Tua Unutoa who grabbed seven and six rebounds respectively.
Roosevelt got out to an early 7-2 lead after Mick Colling had a steal and layup. However, the Governors chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 11 after Mason Semisi converted a field goal from the left block. Both teams traded 3-point baskets after Justin Furtado hit a 3-pointer from the right corner and Farrington's Van Hugo hit a 3-pointer to take a 16-14 lead heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Governors started where they left off. After Isaiah Smith stole the ball and passed it to Jacob McEnroe for the layup and Roosevelt called timeout at 6:48. McEnroe had a fast break dunk to put the Governors up 27-14. After calling a full timeout at 3:09, Farrington decided to hold the ball. With about 12 seconds left, Mark Dudalao hit a 3-pointer from the right wing and Farrington took a 30-18 lead going into halftime.
"I wanted to bring them out of their defense. Basically, they weren't coming out so we decided to set up a play and Mark hit a 3-pointer," said Silva, on stalling and running down the clock in the second quarter.
Despite giving up 14 points the Rough Riders in the first quarter, the Governors came out refocused on defense in the second quarter and held them to four points.
"Helping each other on defense," said Farrington coach Allan Silva, on the defensive adjustments. "They weren't helping in the first quarter and turned it around in the second. Roosevelt is a tough team."
In the third quarter, Farrington hit 5-of-6 free throws to push the lead to 37-20. Mason Semisi was called for a flagrant foul as he struck Colling in the head as he attempted a fast break layup. Colling made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 39-28. Visoria scored the last four points for the Governors and hit 1 of 2 free throws with no time remaining to give them a 43-32 lead heading into the fourth.
Roosevelt was able to cut the deficit to 10 after Josh Alexandre hit a 3-pointer to make it 45-35. Colling and Alexandre combined for 15 of Roosevelt's 17 points in the quarter. The Rough Riders were able to go on a 11-3 run and Colling's jump shot made it 54-47.
"It shows some discipline, but we have to keep getting better, especially on defense," said Silva, on his team holding the lead despite a Roosevelt rally.
However, the Govs outscored the Rough Riders 7-2 toward the end and went 5 of 8 from the line to close it out.
The team shot 64.5 percent (20 of 31) from the line for the game.
"It builds our confidence, but we got to make our free throws at the end," said Visoria.
"We shouldn't miss free throws, bottom line," echoed Silva.
Farrington hosts McKinley on Jan. 15 while Roosevelt travels to Moanalua on the same night.
