Wong to take over Kailua football program

Kailua High School has named former Surfrider offensive lineman Joseph “Hauoli” Wong as head coach of its football team, Kailua athletic director Ramona Takahashi announced Wednesday.

Wong, a 1994 Kailua graduate, attended the University of Hawaii before transferring to Brigham Young University where he majored in Sociology.

After his college playing days, the Miami Dolphins drafted Wong in the 1999 NFL Draft. He was also a member of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Oakland Raiders.

“I’m excited and honored to coach at my Alma Mater,” Wong said in an email interview. “It has been a dream of mine to play college ball and also in the NFL, the one day (come) back to where it all started for me and (become) the head coach at Kailua High School. I can say I’ve (come) full circle, to give back to the young men at my Alma Mater.”

Wong takes over for Gary Rosolowich, who resigned from the program after ten seasons at the helm.

“The things that I will bring to Kailua are hard work and discipline, which were taught to me here at Kailua from coach Alex “The Man” Kane. Those are things that molded me as a player and a man,” Wong added.
