Top Performers
Kinimaka, Furtado garner weekly Top Performers honors

Male Athlete of the Week: Noa Kinimaka, Kamehameha basketball
Behind the hot shooting hand of Noa Kinimaka, the Kamehameha-Kapalama Warriors were able to come up on top in the 8th annual Saint Francis/Merv Lopes Hoops Classic. Kinimaka totaled 65 points during the course of the tourney, earning him a spot on the All-tournament team.

"I'm excited. It's our last tournament before our regular season so it was a way to go out with a bang," Kinimaka said on taking top honors in the tourney.

The senior guard's best scoring performance came in the first round against Farrington, who was the No. 5 ranked team in the ScoringLive/OC16 Boys Basketball Power Rankings at the time. Kinimaka was deadly from beyond the arc, going 6-of-7 from 3-point land for a game-high 25 points.

Kinimaka's scoring came down in the quarterfinal round against Kamehameha-Hawaii, but he proved his value in other areas. The 6-foot-1 senior grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists to help the Warriors cruise into the semifinals.

Against Saint Francis in the semifinal round, Kinimaka showcased his worth at the free throw line, attempting a game-high ten free throw attempts. He connected on eight of those attempts to give him a team-high 16 points against the Saints. His two free throws with 16.1 seconds remaining in overtime firmly put the game out of reach to thrust the Warriors into the championship round.

In the finals against the visiting Eagles from Santa Margarita (Calif.), Kinimaka came off the bench to start the matchup. Regardless of what role he was in to start the game, Kinimaka still found ways to come up big for his team.

The Warriors was up by six at the end of the first quarter, but had struggles executing in the second. For the first six minutes of the second quarter, Kamehameha-Kapalama could not buy a bucket. A Kinimaka trey after the two-minute mark was what it took to break the scoring drought. Kinimaka's trey started an 8-2 run that helped the Warriors take a 21-11 lead at the break.

"We weren't really fazed by (the Eagles') little run (when we couldn't score). We just played Warrior basketball and we executed," Kinimaka said.

Kinimaka also showed good decision-making skills, especially in transition. In a tight fourth quarter, Kinimaka helped set up Fatu Sua-Godinet on the fast break to put the Warriors up by three with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. The senior guard put the Eagles away for good at the line, knocking down two with 23.3 seconds remaining to make it a three-possession game.

"My teammates, we were all just playing together, having fun, and I think that's the best way we played," Kinimaka said after their win over Santa Margarita.

Kinimaka and the Warriors' performance in the tournament earned them the No. 5 spot in the latest edition of the ScoringLive/OC16 Boys Basketball Power Rankings, setting up a big game this Saturday against the No. 3 'Iolani Raiders.

Female Athlete of the Week: Sonest Furtado, Waianae soccer
Scoring machine might be the best way to describe Sonest Furtado.

The 5-foot-6 senior striker scored an astronomical nine goals in a single game Friday when her Waianae team defeated host Nanakuli 13-0 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division game.

"It was unbelievable," Seariders' coach Vince Ramos said. "Her first goal was within the first five minutes of the game and she had five goals in the first half."

Furtado was limited in Waianae's previous game — a 2-1 loss to Radford a week prior — due to injury, but didn't show any signs of rust against the Golden Hawks.

"She just came back from two bad ankles, although she did play in the last 10 minutes against Radford, so she wanted to play pretty bad," Ramos said of Furtado, who played the entire 80 minutes Friday.

Furtado, who is a fourth-year starter for Ramos, has scored in four of Waianae's games this season for a total of 15 goals — just one shy of OIA scoring leader Raisa Strom-Okimoto.

"She's one of my captains and I rarely have to tell her anything," Ramos said. "Maybe one of two things and she gets the job done. She's just a great all-around player and the rest of the girls look up to her."

Furtado, who like Strom-Okimoto has committed to play for the University of Hawaii after high school, has scored more single-handedly than 11 teams in the OIA. She scored four goals against Waipahu earlier this season.

"She had some breakaways and one (goal) was a free kick," Ramos said of Furtado's game against Nanakuli. "She's been playing soccer all her life so she knows her game."

Off the field, Ramos describes Furtado as a humble, hard-working student.

Furtado and the Seariders are 3-3 in the OIA Red West and  host Waialua Friday.
