In front of a racuous home crowd, Maryknoll stunned top-ranked Kamehameha in dramatic fashion, 35-33, in both teams' ILH openers.
Maia Laboy hit the go-ahead layup with just over 10 seconds left to play in regulation, putting Maryknoll up two.
"I was very surprised she was open, what we were trying to do was set a back screen and the free up Cianna (Ochoco) to get the ball," explained Maryknoll head coach Chico Furtado. "But it looks like one guy switched and the other didn't and we (were) able to get over the top and Lexi (Delovio) was smart enough to throw that (pass to Maia)."
Kamehameha had a chance to send the game into overtime with one second left in regulation, but missed both free throws. The ensuing rebound off the miss was pulled down by Maryknoll's Siena Shupe to end it.
The Warriors bounced back from a 21-13 hafltime deficit, and held a 33-31 advantage in the closing stages.
Lexi Delovio led the way with 10 points for the Spartans, including three straight makes in a key stretch.
"She got three straight layups in the second quarter to help give us that 10-point lead," said Furtado. "I thnk our bigs inside really neutralized theirs. We didn't give up a whole lot inside. It was a game of matchups. Everyone had a task and everyone had to fulfill a task in order to get the win."
Tiare Kanoa had 10 points to lead the way for the Warriors, who were held to a season-low in terms of point production.
Free-throw shooting clearly played a factor, with the home team shooting only 50% (5-of-10) from the line, and the Warriors converting just 3-of-12 attempts in the contest.
"We missed a bunch of free throws down the stretch," said Furtado, "I think two front ends (of the one-and-one). We could have gone up eight with a minute and a half. We're very fortunate to come out (with the win)."
