A young but resilient Konawaena squad dug deep to rally past upset-minded Kaiser, 47-45, in an opening night game of the Kaiser Girls Basketball Preaseason Tournament.

After trailing 18-5 after the first quarter and 25-15 at halftime, the host Cougars rallied in the third quarter, taking the lead at 34-33 on Roselyn Shimaoka's layup off of a midcourt steal.

Kaiser outscored Konawaena 21-8 in the period to build a 36-33 lead, and built up a six point advantage off of a Brandi Arita jumper to lead by 6 with just over 3 minutes remaining in regulation.

But the Wildcats rallied to retake the lead with just over a minute left in the game on Selena Molina's putback, and extended to a two-point cushion as Zoe Acdal made one of two free throws with 15 ticks to play.

The Cougars had a chance at the win on a Shimaoka three-pointer from the left wing, but the shot glanced off the rim and was rebounded by Konawaena as time expired.

"We're inexperienced, and Simon did a good job his gameplan was smart. I told them to pick it up at the end, just put a little bit more pressure and they did." said Konawaena head coach Bobbie Awa.

Post Jazzy Perea poured in 20 points and 9 boards, and guard Chanelle Molina added 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals to lead the Wildcats, who were playing their first game of the season.

"We worked as a team. I was just trying to post up hard and get the ball." said Perea of her performance.

Perea's work on the block was key for the Wildcats, as they were forced to play without forward Ihi Victor, who sat with foul trouble for extended stretches.

Molina scored 8 of her 10 points in the first quarter, but was held without a basket until the 5:08 mark of the fourth, due in part to the scheme Kaiser employed, but perhaps also attributed to a bit of a different role she will need to play this season.

"I think she's trying to mold the team together right now. Simon did a good job doubling up and sometimes tripling up on her, but we had a lot of other girls step up." said Awa.

"A lot of the girls on the team are new to the game, so we just gotta help communicate them on where to go and how to get open." said Molina.

Kaiser guard Chantelle Arce led the way with 15 points in the contest, with 9 of them coming in the third. She also added 5 steals and 2 assists, both team highs. Post Brooke Ho scored 9 and Shimaoka had 7, and each added 7 rebounds to their stat lines.
