SALT LAKE - Champions aren’t crowned in the preseason but a win still feels good.

Mililani outscored Moanalua 19-12 in the fourth quarter to defeat Na Menehune 46-41. With the win, the Trojans claim top honors in the Moanalua Girls Peek tournament Saturday afternoon.

"This whole tournament, it was hard fought," said Mililani coach Patrick Basilio. "I thought it was good for our girls to come out (and) get this type of game experience. I know it’s kind of early in the preseason but they needed a game like this."

The Trojans dominated the boards all afternoon, outrebounding Na Menehune 30-22. Mililani’s starting frontcourt of Zyriana Davies, Shantel Appleby, and Summber Bolibol led the way with 19 rebounds

"For once that’s actually one of our strengths," said Basillo. "Our height, our rebounding and our inside presence are going to be some of our strengths (this year)."

Countering Mililani’s strong inside presence was Moanalua’s Ciera Obrien who finished with a game-high seven steals. The junior guard also added three points, two rebounds and an assist.

Fans at Moanalua high school gymnasium were also treated to a back-and-forth duel between Mililani’s Mikaela Limper and Moanalua’s Lachae McColor; who each scored 20 points for their respective teams. Limper knocked down two treys and added four rebounds, two assists and a steal while McColor posted four rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot.

Jamie Yuki got the scoring going for the Trojans early with a basket under the hoop off the inbounds pass from Limper for the first points of the game. Mililani would jump out to an early 9-3 lead thanks to Davies’ seven first quarter points, but Na Menehune would cut it to a three-point deficit by the end of the period.

It was an even second quarter from both squads as they each scored ten points in the period. Mililani took a 24-21 lead heading into the break.

Both teams had struggle scoring in the third quarter with no points coming till the four-minute and 16 mark of the period. McColor hit two of her next four free throws to cut the deficit to one. Limper responded with a midrange jumper to push the lead back to three, and then laid out on the defensive end to gather a loose ball for the steal. She would hit one of two free throws on the other end for the last of Mililani’s points of the third.

After Limper’s free throw, Moanalua proceeded to go on a 6-0 run to end the quarter. Keahi Roy dished out a nice assist from the corner to cut the deficit to two and McColor took a steal coast to coast to tie it up at 27 a piece.  Obrien’s put back just before the end of quarter buzzer gave Na Menehune a 29-27 advantage heading into the final period of regulation.

The two teams traded blows in an exciting fourth quarter with the score tied at 40 a piece with one minute and 31 seconds remaining in the game. Obrien hit one of two to give them a one-point lead, but Mililani scored the remaining six points for the win.  Kristen Tamagawa hit two swish free throws to give Mililani the lead 15 seconds later. Na Menehune had a chance down three with 10.9 remaining, but Kayla Torres got a steal in the backcourt to ice the game. Torres hit two free throws for the final score 46-41.

"We just got to continue to build (some more); find a little more chemistry," said Basilio.
