The Mid-Pacific boys and the Pearl City girls captured their first-ever team titles at Tuesday's Civilian Marksmanship Program/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Air Riflery State Championships at the Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
The Owl boys scored 2,092 points to narrowly edge defending champion Waiakea, who had 2,090 points. Punahou scored 2,086 points to claim third, Leilehua had 2,013 to take fourth and Pearl City had 1,972 to finish fifth. All four members of the MPI team shot at least a 515. They are Zachary Chang (529), Colby Sakumoto (525), Brock Asato (523) and Colin Chun (515).
Waiakea's Justin Gray won the individual championship with a score of 537. Gray shot a 185 from the prone position, 172 standing and 180 kneeling. Punahou's David Watanabe (530) was second, Chang was third, Waiakea's Chris Silva (527) was fourth and Pearl City's Zane Grzeszczak (526) fifth.
MPI is just the fourth different school to win the boys team title. Saint Louis won the first five from 1999 to 2003 while Waiakea has won three times and Punahou six, including a string of five straight from 2005 to 2009.
The Charger girls racked up 2,099 points, 22 better than runner-up Punahou, who finished with 2,078 points. Waiakea scored 2,074 points to take third, St. Anthony had 1,963 to claim fourth and Kauai shot 1,813 to finish fifth. All four of Pearl City's girls also shot a minimum of 515. They are Ashley Somera (535), Jennifer Loui (529), Kristi-Lin Wasano (520) and Kristi Takaki (515).
Maryknoll's Nadia Hata won the individual state crown with a total of 548. Hata shot a 196 from the prone position, 170 standing and 182 kneeling. Saint Francis' Toni Silva (543) was second, Sacred Hearts' Sara Tashima (543) was third, Saint Francis' Isabel Villanueva (536) fourth and Somera fifth.
Pearl City is just the fourth different school to win the girls team title. Sacred Hearts and Punahou had combined to win the first 13 state championships before Waiakea's breakthrough last year.
