Dakota Grossman became just the second person to win four individual state cross country titles Friday morning at the Honolulu Marathon/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships at Island School on Kauai.
The Seabury Hall senior easily won the 3-mile girls' race in a time of 18 minutes and 17.04 seconds. She matched the feat of Eri McDonald, who won four state titles for Punahou from 1995 to 1998.
Grossman was followed in the girls' competition by four sophomores. Iolani's Amanda Beaman (18:52.55) was second, Seabury Hall's Ally Smith (18:56.84) third, Mililani's Vanessa Roybal (19:04.74) fourth and Punahou's Teri Brady (19:11.46) rounded out the top five individual finishers.
Meanwhile, Kamehameha's Davis Kaahanui also repeated as individual champion on the boys' side. The senior completed the 3-mile course in 15:47.51 to edge sophomore teammate Kaeo Kruse, who finished in 15:51.17. Punahou senior Jacques Hebert (15:56.45), Kalaheo freshman Makai Clemons (16:09.37) and Kamehameha junior Kainalu Asam (16:31.53) rounded out the top five individual finishers.
The Punahou girls and Kamehameha boys successfully defended their team championships.
