The streak of Division II dominance in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu continues as 'Iolani defeated the Damien, 28-7 in the inaugural Division II Postseason championship game at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium on Friday night. The Raiders, who were the regular season champions, won their tenth straight ILH Division II title dating back to 2004. The victory also punches their ticket into the HHSAA Division II State Tournament.

"It's huge. We worked all season for this and our captains JT Los Banos, Spencer Kiehm and Chad Hanaoka motivated us and told us how big this game was," said 'Iolani slotback Tyler Teruya.

"We talked about this being a big championship game. Damien is going to come in fired up after a big win last week. When you win close games like that, it says something about your team and they showed a lot of character last week and we knew they were going to give us a good run and they did. I think we played our best game of the year tonight and it was good timing for us," said 'Iolani coach Wendell Look.

'Iolani's Quinton Slade-Matautia intercepted Syles Choy 13 seconds into the second quarter and 6-plays later the Raiders got on the scoreboard first after Austin Jim On passed to Austin Ohira 12-yard touchdown and Keoni-Kordell Makekau's PAT made it, 7-0.

After Damien went three-and-out and a short punt, 'Iolani took over on the Monarchs 44-yard line. As the Raiders drove the Damien 15-yard line, running back Jordan Ross was stopped for no-gain and was injured on the play and did not return for the remainder of the game.

"They got hurt, what can you say, it's football," said Wendell Look, after Makekau and Ross went down with injuries. "We could've use their services, but it's the next guy's job to step in and do the job. Tama did the job and the Ohira brothers came in and relieved that position for Keoni and Jordan Genovia stepped in as a kicker. It's losses, but other guys have to play," said Look.

Tyler Teruya caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Jim On to cap the drive and Jordan Genovia's PAT made it 14-0. Teruya, who is listed at 5'5", played big as he helped moved the chains for the offense.

"I was in the right place at the right time because the coaches always have a great game plan for us," said Teruya, who finished the game with a team-high 12 receptions for 132-yards and one touchdown.

"Tyler has been steady all year. What gets him by is his football sense. He's a smart heady player because he knows what he's doing out there and he can tell other players what to do. He knows what the defense is doing so that's why he makes plays," said Look.

On the ensuing kick off, Damien's Trevor Caspillo returned it 39-yards and a late hit penalty out of bounds put the ball on the 'Iolani 46-yard line. Leeland Lauti rushed for a 30-yard touchdown and he accounted for all 3-plays and 46-yards in the scoring drive that took 1 minute and 2 seconds to bring the Monarchs within a touchdown, 14-7.

"They did their best. We hung in there for a little bit, but in the end we came up short and 'Iolani had a good game plan. 'Iolani just had a couple more plays tonight and that's what it came down to. We made a few mistakes here and there and in the 'Iolani had a good game plan and outplayed us tonight," said Damien coach Eddie Klaneski.

In the second half, 'Iolani's backup running back Tamatane Aga rushed for a 2-yard touchdown and a 15-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach. He carried the load after Jordan Ross went down and finished the game with 19 carries for 79-yards and two touchdowns.

Damien ends their season at 3-5 in the ILH (4-6 overall) and suited up 33 players for tonight's game, but despite the lack in numbers, coach Eddie Klaneski was proud of his team's growth, resiliency and character throughout the season.

"With these seniors and three years in our program, it was a good process for us and they worked hard and these guys learned our system and we did our best," said Klaneski.

Damien running back Leeland Lauti had 15 carries for 86-yards and Damien's only touchdown. Trevor Caspillo had 11 tackles to lead the defense.

'Iolani quarterback Austin Jim On went 28-of-36 passing for 255 yards and two touchdowns.
