Radford boys, Kaiser girls claim OIA cross country titles

Kalaheo junior Makai Clemons and Mililani sophomore Vanessa Roybal won the boys and girls individual titles at the Oahu Interscholastic Association cross country championships at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park Saturday afternoon.

Clemons won the boys crown in a time of 16 minutes and 19.97 seconds, nearly 25 seconds better than runner-up Toshihiro Kosins of Kalani. Mililani's Jakob Dewald finished third, Campbell's Jordan Onskt fourth, and Clemons' Kalaheo teammate Pierce Humble was fifth.

Radford won the 12th team title in school history, but first since 2002. Campbell was second, Kalaheo third, Moanalua fourth and Pearl City fifth. Leilehua, which had won the last eight OIA championships, finished 10th.

Roybal won the girls race in a time of 19:24.91, nearly 30 seconds faster than second-place finisher Alea Amamo of Kaiser. Two other Cougars — twin sisters Lina and Erika Schell — finished third and fifth, respectively, while Pearl City's Maile Shigemasa took fourth.

Kaiser won the team competition — its fifth in school history and first since back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000. Kalaheo was second, Mililani third, Radford fourth and Roosevelt fifth.

The top 50 finishers from the OIA qualified for the Honolulu Marathon/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Cross Country State Championships, which take place Friday at Island School on Kauai.
