HALAWA – Even without the leading rusher, Kamehameha showed that their running game is still a force to be reckoned with.

The Warriors (6-1 overall, 3-1 ILH), ranked no. 2 in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings, bounced back from a 24-0 loss to Punahou to hand Pac-Five (0-5, 0-3) their fifth straight loss of the year.

"It's always nice to win," exclaimed Kamehameha coach Doug Cosbie. "We had some goals going into the game which were to execute better than how we did last week."

Kamehameha was without the leading rusher in the state in Brandon Kahookele. The 5-foot-6, 185-lb senior running back sat out the afternoon's contest to give him rest and time to heal up from some injuries. His absence didn't put a damper to the running game as the Warriors rumbled for a grand total of 340 yards rushing. Starting in Kahookele's stead was Kainoa Simao who led the team in rushing with 216 yards and three touchdowns.

"Simao's a really good back, a different style than Brandon (Kahookele)," said Cosbie of Simao. "Our O-line does a great job up front. It's really the personality of our offense this year, to run the ball."

The first touchdown of the game came off a Pac-Five miscue. Wolfpack Quarterback Anthony Canencia threw a backwards pass that was recovered by Kamehameha defensive back Mason Chow. The turnover help set up Simao's 12-yard touchdown run three plays later.

Simao also punched in the next touchdown on the Warrior's next drive. The senior running back followed his lead blockers before cutting it back for a 16-yard score. TJ Fitzsimmons' PAT was good and the score was 14-0 with 41 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

"All credit goes to the offensive lineman," said Simao. "They work hard every day, every week, pushing forward. To me, they are the best O-line in the state; and behind them that's how we get all our yards."

The Warriors next touchdown was set up with a 60-yard connection down the seam from Fatu Sua-Godinet to Nicholas Young. Two plays later, Michael Mahuka scored on a one yard plunge to put Kamehameha up by three scores.

Kamehameha's next touchdown came from special-teams. Warrior linebacker Chad Souza blocked a Roycen Routt punt and recovered it in the end zone for the last Warrior touchdown of the half.

Pac-Five's only touchdown of the game came on the defensive side of the ball. Pac-Five linebacker Austin Silva stripped a Kamehameha ball carrier and Kasen Kunishima-Takushi returned it 57 yards for a score.

The score was 28-7, at halftime.

Kamehameha added another special-teams touchdown on Kumoku Noa's dazzling punt return. Noa caught the punt at the Kamehameha 49-yard line and returned it 51 yards for a score. Simao capped the game's scoring with his 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

"It's a momentum builder," said Simao of the win. "We slipped last week, and this win is just a stepping stone to get back to the top."

Kamehameha has a bye next week while Pac-Five takes on Saint Francis next Friday.
