WAHIAWA - No. 4 Leilehua displayed its depth, scoring in a variety of ways to down No. 5 Campbell, 32-13, Saturday night at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.

The Mules improved to 3-0-1 overall and took sole possession of first in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West with a 2-0 record. The Sabers (3-1, 1-1) are tied for third with Kapolei and Mililani.

Quarterback Kenan Sadanaga was his usual self, passing for 178 yards and two TDs. But the Mules showed their versatility with wide receiver Jeremiah Andrade throwing a 49-yard TD pass to Mikal Peyton and then catching a 58-yard TD pass from Sadanaga. Also, safety Russell Siavii caught an 11-yard TD pass before returning an interception 55 yards for his second TD of the game.

The Mules also scored on a 19-yard field goal by Timothy Momiyama, who also made a 50-yard PAT because of successive unsportsmanlike conduct penalties after Siavii's interception return.

There's a chance the Mules will be without Siavii and Peyton for Leilehua's homecoming against Aiea next week. Both were ejected from the game. League rules state players ejected are suspended from the ensuing game. Mules interim coach Mark Kurisu said Leilehua will appeal the ejections.

Siavii leaped into the end zone to complete his interception return. The leap appeared to be necessary for him to avoid a pursing defender from making a shoe-string tackle. While that was a judgment call, Siavii drew a second unsportsmanlike penalty on the play for allegedly saying something. Kurisu said a Campbell player had said something that one of the officials apparently attributed to Siavii. The successive penalties not only led to Siavii's ejection, but set up Momiyama's 50-yard PAT.

Peyton was ejected on the ensuing kickoff. Kurisu said a Campbell player was grabbing at the jersey of Peyton, who then pushed off the player to free himself. The gesture was apparently construed as a punch being thrown. Kurisu said the staff will view video of the situations.

But Kurisu doesn't view their apparent loss next week as costly.

"We don't rely on those two players (solely)," Kurisu said. "It's a team effort. We sincerely believe in a team effort. We're not putting all are reps into one player, so if something like this happens, we're fine."

The Mules defense was the difference, holding the Sabers scoreless in the second half, as Leilehua reeled off 17 unanswered second-half points. Campbell had just 96 yards passing, sacked QB Justin Tago three times and, of course, had Siavii's interception return.

"Second half, we tried to establish ourselves again," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. "We have one good play, then we make a mistake. We need consistency on offense. The defense gave us opportunities; we just didn't capitalize on those opportunities."

Both teams scored their first TDs on trickery.

The Mules scored first when Sadanaga tossed an over-hand lateral to Andrade, who threw a perfect pass to a wide-open Peyton. Momiyama's PAT made it 7-0.

The Sabers' punter Jyrelle Umali rushed for nine yards on fourth-and-8 from Campbell's 39 to keep their scoring drive alive. That eventually set up Keoni Piceno's 10-yard TD run with 5:59 left in the first quarter. Jaelen Subia-Etrata's PAT tied it at 7.

Leilehua struck back quickly, using just three plays to move 64 yards, scoring on a Sadanaga's 58-yard TD pass to Andrade. The Mules went to their bag of tricks again, lining up for the PAT with the center away from the rest of the line. Holder Andrade fired to Reece Acohido for the 2-point conversion to give the Mules a 15-7 lead with 3:20 in the first quarter.

The Sabers scored just before the half when Piceno scored from five yards. They tried a reverse for the 2-point try, but failed to convert, making it 15-13 at the half.

The Mules scored twice in the third quarter in quick strikes. Sadanaga tossed an 11-yard TD fade pass to Siavii to make it 22-13. On the Sabers' ensuing series, Siavii scored on his interception return to make it 29-13.

Lineman Penetito Melei led the Mules with two sacks and Acohido had the other. Joshua Torres had two interceptions for the Sabers.
