KAPALAMA HEIGHTS - Kamehameha had strong performances in all phases to dominate Kalihi rival Farrington, 38-3, Friday night in non-league prep football at Kunuiakea Stadium on Kamehameha's campus.

The Warriors improved to 2-0 for first-year coach Doug Cosbie, the former All-Pro tight end, while the Governors dropped to 0-2.

On offense:

Sophomore quarterback Noah Sua-Godinet complete 13 of 23 passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns, thought he was intercepted by the talented Jacob McEnroe.

Senior running back Brandon Kahookele, who had 32 yards at the half, finished with 200 on 22 carries.

"The difference was our quarterback (Sua-Godinet), he really stepped up," Kahookele said. "Everybody was riding on him, trying to pick him up - I don't know how much fumbles we had last game (in the 15-0 win against Castle). We worked on it, ball-handling all at practice. He's a big factor the score is like that."

Kamehaemeha had 22 first downs, 14 by rushing.

On special teams:

Kainoa Simao, who had a 26-yard TD run from scrimmage, returned a punt  53 yards for a score.

Place kicker Tyler Fitzsimmons kicked a 40-yard field goal and was perfect on five PATs. He also had five touchbacks from six kickoffs.

On defense (under defensive coordinator Byron Beatty):

The Warriors limited the Governors to 69 yards and allowed them to pass midfield twice in 11 series. One of those two time, the Govs scored on Kekoa Sasaoka's 41-yard field goal; the other time, Farrington's drive was stopped by an interception by Chad Farias near the goal line on a pass from Montana Liana to McEnroe, who appeared to lose control of the ball near the end zone and Farias came up with the ball.

"I can't say enough about our defense," Cosbie said. "But that's how you win championships. You have to play defense to win football games. Our defense gives up all the chances we need."

About the only downfall for Kamehameha was 14 penalties for 163 yards.

"We looked really good at times," Cosbie said. "But there are a lot of mistakes we have to clean up. There were too many penalties. Some of our executions were not good. But they played with passion. They played hard. As long as we keep getting better we'll be OK."

It wasn't just the Governors' second loss of the season. Concern now is for running back/linebacker Sanele Lavatai. He took a hard hit early in the second quarter and was helped off the field, looking wobbly in the process. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said Lavatai might have suffered a concussion. If that is the diagnosis, Lavatai must past a battery of tests before he can return to practice, much less play in a game.

"I saw the hit," Okimoto said of the play that happened in front of the Governors' sideline. "He took the hit and just went down."

The Governors did a better job of protecting the ball from last week's loss at Wai'anae when they had four turnovers. But the Warriors experienced and physical front line and the quick linebackers were too much for Farrington's inexperienced offense, which lost prolific RBs Tyler Taumua and Abraham Silva to graduation.

"When you lose 10 guys on offense, the offense is going to take time to get better," Okimoto said.

The only returning starter is QB Liana.

Note: Cosbie said the Kamehameha alumnus who told him of the Kamehameha coaching job opening was Kili (Kahekilo) Hugo, who played QB for the Warriors in the late 1990s. Cosbie said he coached Hugo at Menlo College.
