Miguel runs wild for 270 yards, 3 TDs in Waimea win

Destin Miguel had a game to remember to open the 2013 season.

The senior rushed for a weekend-high 270 yards and three touchdowns on just 13 carries to lead Waimea to a 42-0 win over Anuenue in a non-league game Saturday at Hanapepe Ballpark.

"Destin is a great talent and he had some great runs in that game," Menehune coach Kealii Aguiar said. "He definitely had some help from his offensive line, but as far as finishing a play, getting past the second level and finishing in the end zone, that's a tribute to his work ethic in practice and the natural speed that he has."

Miguel, who is 5 foot 8 and 160 pounds, scored on runs of 69, 48 and 49 yards – all in the second half.

"We had about four one-play drives in the second half on the big runs that Destin had," Aguiar said.

Miguel, the 100-meter dash champion in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation, also plays cornerback and returns punts and kicks.

"He's a captain for us," Aguiar said of Miguel. "He starts on every special teams unit, including PAT and PAT block. He pretty much never comes off the field."

The offensive line – made up of left tackle Anu Callahan, left guard Blaze Valente, center CJ Kahepuu, right guard Bryton Lumabao and right tackle Drake Kaohelaulii – along with tight end Patrick Keamoai-Strickland and fullback Kala Dusenberry-Lee helped paved the way for not just Miguel, but Acetyn Emayo, who finished with 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

Aguair also credited downfield blocking by the receivers and slotbacks as a big reason why the running backs were able to break the long runs.

With a roster of just 31 players, but " only 19 eligible right now," conditioning is an important part of the equation for the Menehunes.

"A lot of guys have to play two ways, so as a team, we really take pride in our conditioning," Aguiar said. "Especially for a guy like Destin, who has to carry the ball, defend the pass, cover kicks, cover punts – he has to carry a lot of the load and he's the type of guy that just shows up and works hard. Even if he's physically lagging or beat up, he's going to keep working and not complain or grumble about it.

Waimea visits the Big Island for an afternoon game at Hawaii Prep Saturday.
