Preps' non-league schedule has international flavor

There will be an international flavor to the prep football non-league schedule this season, which opens Aug. 9.

Japan's Kwansei will play Kaua'i Aug. 17 at Vidinha Stadium, while three teams from Canada will travel here.

Vincent Massey College of Winnipeg, Manitoba, will play at Leilehua Aug. 30. Mules' coach Nolan Tokuda said VMC's interest was sparked when it viewed the Leilehua-Service (Alaska) game from 2011 on the internet.

Mount Douglas of Victoria, British Columbia, will take on Lahainaluna Aug 24 at War Memorial Stadium.

Saint Francis, the newest addition to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, also will play Drumheller (Alberta, Canada) on Aug. 24 at Waipahu High. The Saints will make their variety football debut Aug. 9 against Maui High at War Memorial Stadium. Saint Francis will be coached by Mike Ulufale.

Four Mainland schools will be visiting the islands, too.

West Lake (Calif.) will play at Waipahu Aug. 23; Woodbridge (Calif.) will play Waime Aug. 24 at Hanapepe Stadium; Mission Viejo (Calif.) will take on Baldwin Aug. 30 at War Memorial Stadium; and Cottage Grove (Ore.) will battle Kaua'i at Vidinha Stadium on Aug. 31.

Last year's Division I state title finalists, defending champion Kahuku and runner-up Punahou, will travel the same weekend.

The Red Raiders will play East High in Utah and the Buffanblu will meet Helix High of La Mesa, Calif., both on Aug. 31.

The annual Father Bray Classic is set for Aug. 10 at Aloha Stadium.
Pac-Five plays Radford in the preliminary game with host 'Iolani taking on Kalani in the feature game.

Notes: With the addition of Saint Francis, the ILH will use a tournament format to determine its Division I and Division II champions. Saint Francis will be in D2, joining Damien, 'Iolani and Pac-Five. Kamehameha, Punahou and Saint Louis are still in D1.

All of the teams will play each other for a six-game schedule. The D1's second- and third-place teams will play in a semifinal to advance to the championship against the first-place team the following week.

In D2, the first- and fourth-place teams and the second- and third-place teams will play in the semifinals with the winners advancing to the title game the following week.
