Newcomers help Kalani off to auspicious start

Things ought to be promising for the Kalani Falcons.

In his first game since transferring from Roosevelt, junior David Rasmussen passed for 305 yards and four touchdowns in Kalani's 27-0 win against Waialua Saturday night at Kaiser.

What should alarm Kalani's opponents is Rasmussen is still learning the intricacies of the run-and-shoot. He's likely to get better.

"It was really good for the guys to win," Kalani offensive coordinator Ron Lee said. "We've been struggling for a long time. But this is just the start of the season. We still have a long way to go."

Entering the season, the Falcons won only two of their previous 86 games dating to 2000.

Rasmussen missed the nonleague game against Kapaa a couple weeks ago, so Shane Ra filled in for him. All he did was pass for 265 yards and three TDs in a 27-26 loss. But Ra's true position is linebacker, which he returned to with Rasmussen at QB. With Ra in the middle, the Falcons posted a shutout. Ra even returned an interception 66-yards for an apparent TD, but the play was nullified by a penalty.

Rasmussen said he likes the change of scenery.

"It's challenging, academically and activity-wise," Rasmussen said. "I like it."

Rasmussen had help from other newcomers. Slotback Gavin Kim, from Saint Louis, had seven catches for 168 yards and three TDs. Among them was a 99-yarder. Lorenzo Reeves, a transfer from Kaiser, had seven receptions for 54 yards and the other TD.

Kalani hosts Waipahu Saturday at Kaiser. The Marauders are coming off consecutive wins after a 68-0 loss to Campbell in nonleague play.
