Following the recommendation of state athletic directors, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Executive Board voted unanimously in approval of going to a two-week format with regional sites for the Division I girls basketball and boys volleyball state tournaments. The Board, which is comprised of the presidents of the five interscholastic leagues statewide, voted 100-0 in a slight change of events from Sunday's general assembly vote at the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference. The Oahu Interscholastic Association – the state's largest league – abstained all 31 of its votes there, but Kaimuki principal Wade Araki voted in favor of the recommendation Monday. Araki voted in place of OIA president and Kapolei principal Elden Esmeralda, who is also the HHSAA president and therefore not allowed to vote. The 12-team tournaments were formerly four rounds on consecutive days on one island. However, under the new format both would go to a two-week tournament that features four regional sites on three islands and a final four the following weekend. The league champions from the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, Interscholastic League of Honolulu, Maui Interscholastic League and Oahu Interscholastic Association would still have a first-round bye and act as the host of a regional. There would be a single game Friday, with the winner advancing to face the regional host Saturday. The four regional winners would advance to the final four. The changes will go into effect for the upcoming girls basketball and boys basketball seasons. In a surprising move, the Board amended another HIADA recommendation, which sought to include the Big Island in the rotation for the Division II state baseball tournament. The presidents not only added the Big Island, but also Kauai, to the mix and the vote passed 69 to 31. The OIA abstained its vote on the amended proposal. Also, a recommendation to separate scoring for Division II schools at the state cross country meet was defeated by the Board.
