Spring sports heading down the home stretch

I've barely got enough time to even put my picks for state champions in between of all the scores, stats, stories and images we've got to coming in this week, but I had to make sure I did my part to finish up what I began.

So here are some very, very brief (or maybe not so brief) musings with my picks for the Division I and Division I volleyball semifinals and championship games.

Here goes...

DIVISION I BASEBALL

Even though I got three out of the four games of the opening round wrong, at least all of those contests could have gone either way. Two one-run games that could have gone either way and maybe a career-outing by Wyatt D'Alessio on the mound for Kailua... I can live with being wrong by that little.

I'll go with the seeded teams in all but the Hilo-Kailua contest in the quarters, sticking to my guns with an upset special by the Surfriders (I had originally penciled in Iolani in my earlier post).

The key matchup is the battle between Mid-Pacific and Waiakea. The defending champs opted to go with someone other than Medeiros, and it certainly will make things much tighter with him on the mound should he pitch to his capability. Still, I have to go with the Owls in this one. The ILH champs are flat out solid on defense and find ways to manufacture offense.

You have to like Baldwin's chances to make the title game for the second straight year regardless of the opponent. They return a bunch of starters from last year's club, and home field advantage is a definitely plus.

In the second semi, Campbell has a one-two punch on the mound in Ian Kahaloa and Jasten Smeigh that almost mirrors that of the duo of Kodi Medeiros and Quintin Torres-Costa that pitched Waiakea to a state title a year ago. The Sabers haven't racked up a ton of offense this year but if the 13 runs they put up in the OIA Red title game are any indication, their bats could be awakening. I like Campbell to reach the title game.

Baldwin and Campbell will make for quite a title match, but I think the depth of the Sabers' arms will be the key to victory. While the aforementioned Kahaloa and Smeigh get much of the press, Dorrien Villanueva-Hermosura has been a reliable arm in spot starts and could be relied upon come Saturday.

Predicition: CAMPBELL over BALDWIN.

DIVISION I VOLLEYBALL

My final four features Punahou taking on Kaiser in the first semifinal and Moanalua matching up with Kamehameha in the other.

Probably the game to watch before the title game will take place at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium on Thursday as Punahou hooks up with Kamehameha-Hawaii in a rematch of last year's title game. While the focus will likely center around Punahou's Tui Tuileta and Kamehameha's Evan Enriques, I'd like to suggest that the team that prevails will be the one who finds offense outside of these two. In what could come down to a five-setter, you have to go with the defending champs in this one.

Kaiser's smart-hitting outside Casey Bolda is buoyed by an improving front line, a solid setter in Riker Kasamoto and a legitimate second-setter-turned-libero in Mason Ohta, a transfer from reigning Division II champ Hawaii Baptist, and should take care of business against the Bears.

Moanalua looks to be rolling along with a pair of heavy arms in freshman Austin Matautia and senior Tahi Caldwell. Setter Zarin Augustiro has played his best this year with both weapons in the lineup, and their presence makes life for Na Menehune middles much easier. The Mules match up similarly with the OIA Red champs, but lack another go-to hitter beyond Robin Ramelb for setter Devin Ke-a. Look for Na Menehune to sweep past the Mules for the second time this season.

Kamehameha-Kapalama probably more talent from top-to-bottom than anyone in the field, but have yet to really put things in high gear. It wil be scary if they do. Outside Cullen Mosher and setter Puna Kaniho have been anchors all year, but the emergence of Kaehu Ka'a'a and middles Makana Harrison and Azariah Distajo poses matchup nightmares for opponents. Mike Horita is a digging machine in the backrow, and had 15 digs in three sets against Punahou just a week ago. Waiakea will likely need to replicate what they did in a five-set thriller over Kamehameha-Hawaii in order to get past the Warriors from Kapalama. I see a win for Kamehameha in 4 sets, perhaps a sweep.

In the semis, I'll take the Buffanblu to win in four and the Warriors to do the same to Na Menehune, setting up one final pairing between the two ILH powers.

Both teams will be hard-pressed to replicate the electric five-set match that Punahou won to take home the ILH title, but it should still be dandy. I think Ka'a'a and Distajo will continue to integrate themselves into the Warriors offensive schemes as the tourney progresses, opening up the options even further for Kaniho. Tuileta will get his, as will Kupono Fey, and with Colin Peros anchoring a solid back line, its basically a push. The war might be won in the middle, where Daniel Andrews and Noah Hayashida made some big strides for the Buffanblu to help push through to that five-set win a little less than a week ago.

In what might be a bit of an upset special, I think Kamehameha will raise the trophy in 2013, bringing a state boys volleyball title back to Kapalama for the sixth time in its history.

Prediction: KAMEHAMEHA-KAPALAMA over PUNAHOU (in five sets).
