OIA Red volleyball playoffs set for exciting finish

Its a tale of three teams for the 2013 OIA Red division boys volleyball title, and definitely one that looks to come down to an exciting finish, with storylines to back it up. And though each is assured of a state tournament berth, taking home that league title is almost certainly on the minds of the players on each club.

Let's start with the East top-seed Kalaheo (13-1).

A little over seven days ago, undefeated Mustangs looked poised to punch its ticket to the OIA Red division title game, as they took down McKinley 3 sets to 1 on April 23 and held a two sets to none lead over Kaiser in the Championship bracket final on April 25. But the Cougars stormed back to post a stunning 27-29, 19-25, 25-18, 26-24, 15-10, victory over the Stangs, putting an end to Kalaheo's spotless OIA campaign in 2013.

The Mustangs boast an impressive front line with 6-foot-7 Luke Owens and 6-foot-5 Sam Orcutt and 6-foot-4 Anthony Rowan, as well as arguably the premiere setter in the league in senior Silila Tucker. Sophomore Kupa'a Harrison has become a go-to hitter of sorts, racking up 35 kills in the last two games.

In order to claim their first league title since 2005, Kalaheo will need to post a victory over Moanalua Tuesday, and then muster consecutive wins over Kaiser on Thursday and Saturday.

Moanalua (12-4) might be the team that no one in the OIA wants to face at this juncture. After opening with a straight set win over Waipahu, a three sets to one loss at the hands of Kaiser booted Na Menehune into the consolation bracket, where Na Menehune secured wins over Leilehua and McKinley on consecutive nights to get within one win of a return to the title game.

Of note is the straight-set dismantling of the Tigers on their home floor on April 25th, a match that marked the return of outside hitter Tahi Caldwell to the lineup. The 5-foot-10 senior was a clear difference-maker, notching 7 kills, a dig and a block, and his presence forced a good portion of the attention away from freshman sensation Austin Matautia, who had his way with the now more spread-out McKinley block to the tune of 8 kills, most of which came on one-on-one opportunities.

Setter Zarin Augustiro has been solid all year, but looked much more efficient and comfortable having two heavy arms in the rotation.

Na Menehune are gunning for their third consecutive Red crown, and second straight under head coach Alan Cabanting. And much like Kalaheo's formula for a title, Moanalua will need a win Tuesday and then back-to-back wins over Kaiser to make it a three-peat.

Kaiser (13-1) might be the biggest surprise of this trio. The relentless Cougars sit in the driver's seat to bring the first ever boys volleyball league title back to Hawaii Kai, thanks in large part to the aforementioned five-set rally over then-unbeaten Kalaheo.

The play of senior outside hitter Casey Bolda has been key all season, but during the playoffs, it has been the emergence of middles Billy McGivern, Joe Hoddick and Makena Kaneaiakala that have given Kaiser a needed boost. Hoddick, a 6-foot-4 senior went down with an apparent ankle injury in the latter stages of the Kalaheo win, but will likely be able to suit up on Thursday for the title match.

An important addition for Kaiser this season was clearly the arrival of libero Mason Ohta, a transfer from Hawaii Baptist Academy. His 27 digs over the past two games were a big factor in keeping the Cougars alive against the Mustangs, and his presence as a second setter in Kaiser's rotation is a big weapon as well.
