National Football Foundation names 12 scholarship recipients


The Hawaii chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame has announced this year's 12 recipients of college scholarships worth $1,000 each.

A five-member selection committee picked 12 Hawai'i high school senior football players based on their academic achievements, community service and extra-curricular activities and football abilities.

Selected were: Nicholas Kwon of Mid-Pacific Institute (Pac-Five), Tanner Nishioka of 'Iolani; James Kela Grace of 'Aiea, Josiah Situmeang of 'Iolani, Reece Foy of 'Iolani, Robert Hugh McCarthy IV of Leilehua, Kyle Ishikawa of 'Aiea, Jarin Morikawa of Mililani, Joshua Conlan of 'Iolani, Lealofi Mauga of Damien, Branson Tyler Funakoshi of Leilehua and Zen Ikea Ikehara of Kamehameha-Kapalama.

Kwon, the top-scorer of the 12 honorees, may have his application forwarded to the national committee for a chance at a four-year scholarship, according to selection committee chairman Don Clephane.

The 12 will be honored at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. April 28 at the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. Individual tickets for the event is $65 each, or $750 for a Gold Circle Table  and $700 for a regular table. Each table is good for 10 guests.

Deadline to reserve tables or seats is April 25. Table selections will be made on a first- come, first-served basis. Make check payable to Hawaii Chapter, NFFCHF.
