MILILANI - A pair of second-half defensive scores lifted Radford to a 14-7 upset of No. 6 Mililani in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West Conference opener for both teams Friday night.

A crowd of about 1,500 at John Kauinana Stadium saw the Rams rally from a 7-0 halftime deficit to improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Red West. The Trojans, who committed seven turnovers, fell to 1-1 and 0-1.

"This is just a testament to the hard work that our players put in and our coaches put in," Rams' head coach Fred Salanoa said.

After struggling offensively for much of the first half - Radford picked up just four first downs in the first 24 minutes - it got a boost from its defense late in the third quarter. Mililani quarterback Jarin Morikawa was intercepted on a fourth-down pass by Erik Lutali, who returned it 79 yards to put his team on the board. The extra point was blocked and the Trojans held a 7-6 lead with three minutes and 23 seconds left in the third quarter.

Mililani's first possession of the fourth quarter - which began at its own 45-yard line - came to a halt at the Radford 3 after a fumble on the exchange between quarterback and running back was covered up by the Rams' Cy Salanoa. The Trojans' defense held on the ensuing drive and got the ball back to the offense with 5:44 to play at the 50-yard line.

Five plays into the drive, back-to-back defensive penalties on the Rams moved the ball inside their own 10-yard line and set-up a first-and-5 for the Trojans from the 7.

However, Radford's Krix Hughley intercepted the Morikawa pass just in front of the goal line and returned it 17 yards. It was the fourth pick Morikawa threw in the game. He also lost a pair of fumbles.

The Rams' went three-and-out on its next drive and after a short punt, the Trojans took over at the Radford 33. Following a short gain on first down, Morikawa's pass was batted at the line of scrimmage and back into his hands for an 8-yard loss to set-up third-and-16. Morikawa dropped back to pass, but was hit before he began his throwing motion and fumbled. The ball was scooped up by Radford's Jeff Linzy, who went 21 yards untouched for the go-ahead score with 1:48 remaining.

The Rams lined up for the PAT, but ran a fake with Conley - who is the place kicker - taking the ball around the right corner for the two-point conversion.

Mililani advanced the ball to its own 49-yard line on the game's final drive, but Morikawa's fourth-down pass fell incomplete.

"Radford outplayed us," Trojans' head coach Rod York said. "Their offense wasn't that productive, but they had just one turnover and their defense outplayed our offense, so the credit goes to them."

After a scoreless opening quarter, Mililani scored on the first play of the second on a 60-yard pass from Morikawa to Deshawn Duncan-Benson, who out-leaped his defender along the right sideline and raced into the end zone. Ryan Tokunaga's kick made it 7-0 with 11:49 left until halftime.

Radford finished with just 178 yards of total offense and eight first downs. Mililani was just 2-of-16 on third downs. The teams combined for 19 penalties for 190 yards.
