Kamehameha took advantage of three walks in the top of the first to score five runs en route to an 8-2 win over 'Iolani in an afternoon ILH Division I matchup at 'Iolani High School.

Kamehameha head coach Vern Ramie said, "We were fortunate, we didn't get a lot of hits in that first inning. We knew if we could get a few runs then Keenan (Lum) has a good chance of making those runs stack up for us."

Kamehameha's 6-foot-2 Lum pitched all 7 innings and recorded 4 strike-outs and kept 'Iolani on their toes throughout.

"He threw a lot of strikes today, he didn't have his best stuff today, but it's a sign of a good pitcher. He still changed speeds and threw strikes and made quality pitches when he needed to," said Ramie.

Lum credited the players behind him for a solid defensive effort.

"My defense backed me up big time today when we needed it. When we needed a big double-play, we got it and they made every routine to hard plays. I wanted to close out the game strong, nothing is better than closing a game and winning it."

Coach Ramie agreed and was satisfied with his team's defensive effort this afternoon, "That's what we have been telling our kids: we have to pitch and play defense to keep us in ball games. If we pitch well and play good defense, we will be in every game. In all three games we lost, we didn't play well defensively and it got away from us."

Kamehameha's Tyler Meditz helped put the Warriors on the scoreboard as he crushed an RBI single to deep left field to score JC De Jesus.

Later, Hoku Botelho, Meditz and Jason Murakami each scored runs off of walks.

It was a nightmare for 'Iolani and during the first inning and head coach Brent Shimokawa pulled Toshi Taniguchi after walking his third batter and replaced him with Javin Nohara.

Coach Shimokawa said, "When we don't throw strikes, we can't defend walks. The past few games we have been playing from behind from the start. We need to do a better job of throwing good quality strikes."

Ryan Kaleiopu hit an RBI single and courtesy runner, Ulu Farm scored from third base, putting Kamehameha up 5-0.

Starting Kamehameha pitcher Keenan Lum said, "In my mind, getting that lead was very comforting and I wanted to go out there and it helped a lot."

In the top of the third inning, Kamehameha's Ethan Rosehill scored from third-base after a wild pitch, as the Warriors led 6-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, 'Iolani's Max Look got the Raiders on the scoreboard after an RBI from Christian Donahue. Corey Nakakura hit an RBI and Donahue scored to trail, 6-2.

"It gave us an opportunity and we had other opportunities," said Coach Shimokawa.

In the top of the seventh inning, Meditz blasted another RBI to bring De Jesus home. Kekai Rios had an RBI and Meditz scored putting the Warriors up, 8-2.

Kamehameha improved to 3-3 in the ILH standings behind first-place Mid-Pacific, while 'Iolani falls to 2-4.

"Right now we're picking it up because we got off to a rough start. On Saturday we play Mid-Pacific and we'll try and do better," said Lum.
