Top-seeded Maryknoll picked up where it left off a quarter century ago in the Hawaiian Airlines Division I boys' basketball state tournament.

The Spartans outlasted the Bears in an offensive fourth quarter with 31 points in a 64-54 quarterfinal win Thursday night at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium.

Maryknoll, which previously played in the state tournament in 1988, improved to 9-0 in quarterfinal games. The Spartans will meet fourth-seeded Konawaena in Friday's 7 p.m. semifinal at the Blaisdell Arena.

Caleb Gilmore poured in a team-high 20 points for the Spartans. Tobias Schramm added 14 and Joshua Burnett chipped in 13, including a resounding dunk after a steal.

Teva Eldredge led all scorers with 21 points, 19 coming in the second half, for the Bears, who were without 6-foot-3 center  Bradley Bowlin, who injured his ankle in Wednesday's opening-round 57-43 win against Kapolei.

"He would've made a big difference," Baldwin coach Wayne Gushiken said. "He played well against them in the Punahou tournament in December. He's used to playing against big guys."

The Bears' next tallest experienced players are Eldredge and Phillip Thomas, who had 15 points. Both are 6-2 and no match for the 6-8 Schramm and 6-5 Hyrum Harris. The Spartans' bigs combined for 26 rebounds with Harris pulling down 19 of them.

Baldwin also had foul trouble, as Randy Wong and Ryan Garces fouled out.

"Our so-called big guys were in foul trouble, so we couldn't be as aggressive," Gushiken said.

The Spartans started with man-to-man defense, but switched to zone later, using their height advantage.

"I tried as much as possible to play man-to-man because the kids love playing man-to-man, but if we cannot stay with our man, we have to play zone," Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said. "Cutting off lanes, cutting off angles. We just use our length to keep them from taking shots."

The Spartans might have lived a little comfortably early had they been better at the free throw line, where they were 23 of 44. While Harris and Schramm were doing their job under the basket, they couldn't find it at the free throw stripe. They were a combined 7 of 21.

"That's one of the things we're going to work on tomorrow," Grant said. "During pre-game, we're going to practice our free throws. We cannot win a championship if we're going to shoot 3 for 9. Our bigs were 3 for 12 at the half. That's terrible."

The game started out as a defensive struggle. The Spartans took a 13-12 lead after one quarter and had a 25-23 lead at the half. After a tight third quarter, Maryknoll's lead was still by a basket at 33-31.

But foul trouble began taking its toll on the Bears, who watched the Spartans pull away slowly, eventually tallying 31 points in the quarter. Schramm was able to score three of his four second-half field goals in the fourth.

"They figured out how to isolate that big guy on that screen and roll," Gushiken said. "They were able to pump it in and we were in foul trouble."
