Host Iolani avenged an earlier season home loss against St. Louis, knocking off the visiting Crusaders 50-30, for a first round victory in the ILH Division I single-elimination tournament.

"Good win for us," exclaimed Iolani Head Coach Dean Shimamoto. "It was good for us to have a good offensive game, and we haven't had one of those in a long time. It was good to see our guys hit shots and continue to play good defense."

Eleven Raiders scored for the home team with Chris Gallacher leading the way with a game high 10 points off the bench. Gallacher also knocked down a triple.

Shimamoto offered nothing but praise for Gallacher. "It's good to see him step up. When he's aggressive, he's really good. He was going to the bucket and looking for opportunities."

The bench also slightly outscored the starters by a slim 26-24 advantage.

"It was one of those games where I had no idea who our leading scorer was and I think that's great," said Shimamoto. "We have so many guys that make contributions outside of the scoring column; that's Iolani basketball."

Assists were crucial to Iolani's balanced attack as they assisted on 10 of their 16 made field goal attempts. Former QB Reece Foy had the most dimes with four assists. Foy also had four steals, as well as four points; which were all from free throws.

Iolani started the game red-hot out of the gate going five for five from the field. Their first miss came on the last possession of the first quarter, but Erik Yamada was able to gather the offensive rebound and dished it to Zach Buscher who nailed his shot just as time expired to give the Raiders a 12-2 lead at the end of the first.

"That's foreign to us," said Shimamoto on starting the game five for five. "We try to work for really good shots, and our shot selection in the first half was really good; our guys were able to knock down those opportunities."

Nate Mantanona provided a spark for the Crusaders scoring five points in the 2nd quarter. Mantanono would help cut the deficit to single digits, but Iolani went on a 10-0 run to close the first half giving them a 24-7 at halftime.

Drew Uchiyama was the leading scorer for Iolani in the first half, scoring all of his seven points in the half. Uchiyama also finished with two rebounds, an assist and a steal.

St. Louis hustled to give themselves extra possessions in the first half (eight offensive rebounds, five steals), but a poor shooting night put them in an early hole.

"We didn't hit shots," lamented St. Louis Head Coach Keith Spencer. "Iolani was hot in the first; if we hit the shots in the first quarter we would have had a chance."

In the 3rd quarter, Gallacher would split a pair at the line to give Iolani a 30-9 lead at the 4:17 mark. The Crusaders then went on an 8-0 run that was spearheaded by Jarin Hall-Monis. During that scoring run, Hall-Monis connected on two free throws as well as hustled after an errant pass to prevent a back court violation.

"We may not be the best basketball team in shooting but we always got the effort," said Hall-Monis. He finished with six points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and had a blocked shot.

However for St. Louis, Iolani went on an 8-0 run of their own; which was capped off by post Trey Kidd's three-point play. Kidd also had two blocks on the defensive side of the ball. Starting forward Josiah Situmeang also added a block shot and led the team in rebounding (six boards).

"Those guys have really done a great job on playing their roles," said Shimamoto of his bigs. "Trey (Kidd) has been coming up huge in the last three games, grabbing rebounds, being an inside presence, even getting an and-one bucket today."

Crusaders were able to stop the Raider run with the last points of the 3rd quarter coming off of Ihaka Johnson's triple. Iolani led 38-21 heading into the fourth.

Despite the deficit, St. Louis hustled for every loose ball and accumulated 26 total rebounds with 18 of those coming on the offensive side of the glass.

"I love my team; these kids played hard all through the season," said Spencer. "We came back in the second half but it was too late. Out of the 18 offensive rebounds, we couldn't convert them. If we converted on about half of those, we probably would have been in the game."

"First quarter we didn't come out very hard," added St. Louis leading scorer Nate Mantanona. "Everybody was playing for the seniors so after half time we just played harder but by then it was too late."

Mantanona led St. Louis with a team high nine points with two steals and an assist and rebound.

Iolani will face Maryknoll Wednesday at 6 p.m. In their most recent meeting, the Spartans were able to outlast the Raiders slow down strategy by the final score of 15-13.

"We don't like the fact that we gave up 18 offensive rebounds; especially going into the game tomorrow against a team that offensive rebounds really well," said Shimamoto on Iolani's future matchup against Maryknoll. "They're a really good team. They got good guards, they can shoot, they got big guys that can rebound, and they can run the floor. We're gonna have to play our best basketball and come in with a game plan and execute it. Just hope for the best."
