WAIPIO - Leo Klink scored a hat trick as Kalani dominated Hilo, 7-1, in the first round of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Boys Soccer Division I State Championships Wednesday afternoon, setting up a clash with OIA nemesis and top-seeded Mililani Thursday.

“I thought we played very well,” said Falcons coach Michael Ching. “We played the way we were supposed to play; we finished early and got to rest. Very pleased to beat a state team like this.”

The Falcons got on the board fast and with ease against their neighbor island opponents. The first goal, scored by senior Leo Kink, came during the early minutes of the opening period. Klink, sprinting his way down the sideline and past the defense, placed a well aimed, left footed shot into the right corner of the net. The goal by Klink put Kalani up 1-0 in the fourth minute.

“From the very start, we knew we had to score fast,” said Klink. “It was a great start…definitely a great push and a lot of confidence.”

The score by Klink was his first of three goals today for the senior. He leads the state in scoring with 23 goals so far this season.

“(Klink's performance) it was fantastic,” said Ching. “He set the tone early. He just puts so much pressure. He's fast, he's strong, he's skilled. He's the best forward in the state, most goals in the state.”

A foul in the box for Hilo led to the Falcons next score. The penalty kick, earned by Klink after being brought down inside the eighteen, was taken by Steve Teshima after Ching made the decision to switch shooters when Klink was initially planning on taking the kick. The senior drilled the ball past the keeper to put the score at 2-0 in the 20th minute of play.

“I definitely wanted to take that kick. I was definitely mad and made a ruckus out of it,” said Klink. “In the end, it's about the team and not my personal wants so it benefits the team when I give it to someone else who is better than me at PKs.”

Jarrett Hayama put the next point on the board for Kalani. A pass by Klink inside the 18 connected with Hayama near the six-yard box. The senior finished the play with a slow shot just edging through the goal line. That score was the final score going into halftime putting the Falcons up by three.

“Today we definitely came out strong and with a lot of confidence. It definitely showed it the game,” said Klink.

Klink took advantage of a bouncing loose ball inside the eighteen for a finish and senior Marcus White, with a solo effort, found his way past the defense to tack on a goal as the Falcons added two points to their lead at the 43rd minute and 44th minute.

“The ball in just bouncing in the box and I was just in the right spot at the right moment,” said Klink.

Hilo was finally able to find a glimmer of success during the 49th minute play. I ricocheting shot taken by Adryan Vidad put Hilo on the board, putting the score at 5-1.

“Hilo is definitely a strong team,” said Klink. “Not a team to be taken lightly. They definitely gave us a tough game.

A score by Ryan Bui and another by Klink ended the game at 7-1. Kalani now moves to play Mililani in the stadium tomorrow night. The last time these two teams met was in the state championship last year, in which Mililani won 3-1.

“Definitely a heart breaking game last year. Coming into tomorrow's game, we're definitely going to come out strong with a lot of feelings of last year,” said Klink. “We're definitely score early and keep the possession on our side and hopefully we can beat Mililani tomorrow.”

IOLANI 6, CAMPBELL 0

Tristan Medios-Simon got the Raiders started with a goal in the 9th minute. Kainoa Fong would tack a goal on while KJ Ahlo scores the last goal going into halftime.

The second half was not too dissimilar as the Raiders added another three goals from Timmy Leong (49th), Quinn Cowan (53rd) and Brendan Seto (75th).

KAPOLEI 4, KAISER 0

The Hurricanes blew through Kaiser Wednesday afternoon with a 4-0 win.

Dylan Orian got things started for the Hurricanes, scoring in the 22nd minute. Orian is the fourth leading scorer in the state.

Keo Ponce tacked on another in the 31st minute while Brandon Begonia had two scores coming in at the 45th and 58th minute.

PEARL CITY 1, KING KEKAULIKE 0 (10-9 PKs)

The Chargers escape with a win after 90 minutes of play, two overtime time periods, and three shoot outs against King Kekaulike.

The score was 0-0 going into the shootouts. Both teams went 5/5 in the first round. When the second round came along, the two teams went 3/5. Finally, in the third round, Pearl City came out victorious after a miss goal by the neighbor island visitors (2-1).
