Kahuku-Kamehameha tops nonleague schedule

The marquee matchup in the second week of nonleague play is highlighted with Kahuku taking on Kamehameha, 7 p.m. Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

The Red Raiders are ranked first in the first ScoringLive Football Power Rankings of the season. The Warriors are ranked eighth.

Kahuku is coming off a 26-0 win against Waianae, while Kamehameha saw Farrington rally from a 21-14 deficit to win 26-21.

The Warriors shuffled junior quarterbacks Makoa Camanse-Stevens and Nephi Stevens on every play against the Governors. Kamehameha also got burned on special teams twice, as Farrington scored its deciding TDs after blocked punt and a punt return.

The Red Raiders got a nice effort from QB Viliami Livai, who was 9 of 16 for 160 yards and threw one TD. But Kahuku's defense also contributed to the damage with a pair of interception returns for TDs.

Likewise, Kamehameha's defense scored two its TDs on defense against Farrington. Defensive back Taylor Taliulu had two picks, including one for a 75-yard TD return.

No. 4 Farrington at No. 9 Iolani, Saturday, 2 p.m.

Like in the old days of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, when it played at Honolulu Stadium, this is a matinee matchup.

The Raiders are coming off a 26-7 win against Radford, while the Governors rallied to beat Kamehameha.

A good test for Iolani, which will face a Division I-type team in Farrington. Likewise, the Governors, who didn't commit one penalty in last week's game, will test their discipline against a usually-disciplined team.

Returning QB Reece Foy passed for 156 yards, but rushed for two TDs in the Raiders' win. RB Tyler Taumua rushed for 132 yards and a TD for the Govs against the Warriors.

Aiea at Roosevelt, Friday, JV 5 p.m., varsity to follow

Both are probably glad to see each other after opening against the No. 2 (Saint Louis) and No. 3 (Punahou) teams last weekend. Na Alii fell to the Crusaders, 22-14, and Roosevelt lost to the Buffanblu, 38-0.

Na Alii and the Rough Riders both struggled offensively, netting 72 and 34 yards, respectively. Both are breaking in QBs in Aiea's IIsaiah Fonoti and Roosevelt's Keha Wong. Wong is a little behind because he missed the pass league because of baseball, which might be in his future.

No. 3 Punahou at Kailua, Friday, JV 5 p.m., varsity to follow

This should be a good physical matchup for both teams. The Buffanblu's huge bookends, 6-foot-8 Luke Kaumaule and 6-7 DeForest Buckner will have big target to bring down in Kailua's 6-2, 233-pound QB Kahaku Iaea, who passed for 305 yards and three TDs in a loss at Kealakehe.
