Prep notes from last week

Farrington is celebrating its 75th anniversary this school year.

Saturday night, the Kalihi school honored its 1965 Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship team with a pregame dinner before the Kamehameha-Farrington preseason game. Farrington beat Kamehameha, 26-21. In 1965, Farrington beat Kamehameha, 16-6, to win the championship in the old Turkey Day game at the old Honolulu Stadium. That was before the public schools left the ILH to join the Oahu Interscholastic Association.

About 20 players from both teams - the former Warriors also were invited - gathered outside the Kaiser cafeteria. Several of the players from both sides served as honorary captains for the Kamehameha-Farrington varsity game later that night.

Joining the players was former Star-Bulletin columnist Jim Becker, whose front-page story made the Farrington team legendary. The players stayed at a Waikiki hotel the night before the game and Becker was given unlimited access from when they arrived at the hotel through after the game. His story's headline: The Day the Govs Won it All...

49th and 50th state of affairs

Fellowship wasn't limited to players of the past this weekend. On Friday night, players from Alaska's Service Cougars and Leilehua sat together in the bleachers at Roosevelt to watch the Punahou-Roosevelt game. The teams played to a 34-all game Thursday night at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.

Girls on the gridiron

Kailua's Sierra Kadooka kicked two PATs in the Surfriders' loss at Kealakehe over the weekend. She is one of at least four girls suiting up this season. Farrington's Shanelle Atabay Carillo also is a kicker, but Radford's Jessie Ines is listed as a wide receiver and Waialua's Ryanne Murakami-Samala is listed as a defensive lineman/receiver.

Early commits

The new Pac-12 appears to have the jump on Hawaii's football recruits.

Five players who have made verbal commitments have selected Pac-12 schools.

Running backs Steven Lakalaka of Punahou and Psalm Wooching of Kealakehe have picked UCLA.

Saint Louis defensive tackle Kalei Auelua has picked Washington and Kamehameha defensive back has selected Washington State.

Kamehameha lineman Kiha Sai said intends to join one of the two new members of the Pac-12, Utah.

Lakalaka said he picked UCLA because its campus is similar to Punahou's. He added that UCLA was a good fit for him academically and for football. The Bruins were the only only program to make him an offer at this early juncture he said.

Taliulu, who returns to the Kapalama campus after playing at Aiea last season, jumped on WSU because it was willing to let him play baseball, too. He also had an offer from Idaho and that Boise State was close to making an offer. The two Idaho schools don't have baseball programs.

Auelua said he picked Washington over Colorado, Utah, Hawaii and Boise State.
