Kahuku, Kapolei squeeze wins in Red tourney openers

KAPOLEI-Goals were at a premium in the opening round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red girls' soccer tournament Tuesday night at Kapolei stadium.

Janice Poua's free kick from about 30 yards with two minutes left in sudden death double overtime lifted Kahuku past Campbell, 1-0, and Bianca Gonzales' penalty kick in the 44th minute was the difference in Kapolei's 1-0 win against Kailua.

In opening round games at Wai'anae, Sonest Furtado's two goals gave the Seariders a 2-1 win against Roosevelt and Castle rolled over 'Aiea, 3-0.

All of Tuesday's losers were eliminated from the tournament.

The winners advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals.

At Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium, Kapolei (7-2-2), the West's third seed, will meet East second seed Moanalua (9-1) at 5:30 p.m. and East fourth seed Kahuku (6-2-3) will play West top seed Mililani (9-0-1) at 7 p.m.

"It's like going from the frying pan into the fire," Kahuku coach Glenn Fujita said of facing the Trojans, who have yet to allow a goal this season. "But we look forward to the challenge. We know what Mililani's all about. Year in and year out, they're the class of the OIA."

At Kaiser, East third seed Castle (8-2-1) will face West second seed Pearl City (6-0-4) at 5:30 p.m. and West fourth seed Wai'anae will meet East top seed Kaiser (9-0-1) at 7 p.m.

Winners of the quarterfinals will secure four of the OIA's six Division I state tournament berths. The losers will play for the final two berths.

In White tournament openers at Nanakuli, Radford beat McKinley, 4-0, and the host Golden Hawks beat Farrington, 5-0.

In White semifinals Wednesday at Kailua High, West top seed Leilehua (3-6-1) will play Radford (2-8-1) at 5:30 p.m. and East top seed Kalaheo will meet Nanakuli (4-6-1) at 7 p.m.

All four teams have secured Division II state tournament berths.

KAHUKU 1, CAMPBELL 0 (2 OT)

The Red Raiders lost their leading scorer, Renee Oei just minutes into the second overtime, yet pulled out the win against the relentless Sabers (5-3-3).

Oei had pulled a leg cramp had to be transported by golf cart off the field. But Poua, senior transfer from Kamehameha, nailed her free kick with a slight curve that just spun out of Campbell goalkeeper Brittney Copp's arms.

"It was a lucky shot," Poua said.

"Renee would usually be making that kick," Fujita said.

Poua did not play soccer for Kamehameha, but wanted to return to her home district, where she had played AYSO with Oei as a youngster.

"It's closer to home so it makes me want to play harder," Poua said.

As with the Red Raiders' defense, the Sabers' also was solid, keeping Oei from scoring.

"We worked hard, put up a good fight," Campbell first-year coach Brett Kagawa said. "We didn't make use of our chances. They made use of one of theirs."

In postseason, ties after two regulation 40-minute halves are followed by up to two 10-minute sudden death overtime periods. Had the game remained tied, penalty kicks would've decided the game.

KAPOLEI 1, KAILUA 0

In another defensive struggle, the Hurricanes cashed in a foul inside the penalty box for the lone score of the game after a scoreless first half.

Gonzales, a poised sophomore midfielder, turned her back to Kailua goalkeeper Janell Alameida, turned around and fired a shot just right of the keeper.

"I'm just trying to calm myself down and making sure the goalkeeper can't figure out where I am, but she doesn't know because my back's to her," Gonzales said.

Kapolei coach Brian Beck had no hesitation of having a sophomore put in such a crucial situation.

"As soon as there was a PK, her hands struck straight up into the air," Beck said. "'Coach, I want it.' It's so awesome to have a player that (says) 'I want it. I want it.'"

Wednesday's quarterfinal with Na Menehune has extra meaning. Moanalua beat Kapolei in the title game last year.

"I was kind of worried these girls were going to look past Kailua," Beck said. "I'm glad they didn't, but I know they want Moanalua real bad. They played a little physical with us last year, so I think the girls want some revenge."

NOTES

Mililani's girls have been the most dominant team in the OIA, having won 13 of 33 league titles. Pearl City is the closest with seven.

In the boys' tournament next week, Kapolei won a coin toss against Mililani to take the top seed in the Red West. The teams played to a scoreless tie during the regular season and finished with 9-0-1 records.

The top six teams in the Red West are Kapolei, Mililani, Pearl City, Campbell, Aiea and Radford. The top six in the Red East are Kalani, Moanalu, Kahuku, Kaiser, Kailua and Castle.

The top three in the White are: Kalaheo, Farrington and McKinley in the East; and Waianae, Nanakuli and Waipahu in the West.
