Roosevelt (5-7, 8-11) 11 18 12 1859
V. Inaura 16 pts
V. Hugo 20 pts  4 3pm

The Farrington Governors knocked off the Roosevelt Rough Riders to stay perfect in OIA Red East.

Van Hugo led the Govs with 20 points, sinking four 3 pointers and went 6 for 6 from the free throw line.

Farrington head coach Allan Silva said, "I'm glad Van is shooting better tonight. In practice he doesn't miss a shot. When we play Horse, he beats everyone in the shooting game, that's how good the kid is. Van worked really hard today."

Farrington's big men, Tyler Liana and Mason Semisi scored point-blank lay ups off of rebounds. Semisi scored 10 of his 11 points in the second quarter after several put backs off of rebounds. Liana contributed 13 points from the post. Even Jacob McEnroe was able to get into the paint and score and even if he didn't score, he was able to go to the free throw line.

"When those three guys work the glass correctly, they're unstoppable," said Silva.

Farrington had six blocked shots. Liana and Marco Cudia accounted for two each and swatted some of them into the stands and it fired up their teammates.

In the beginning of the first quarter, both teams traded baskets. There was a stretch when Roosevelt struggled making shots and Farrington went up, 14-6.

However a three pointer in the right corner by Roosevelt's Henry Maumalanga and a jump shot by Valen Inaura brought the Rough Riders within 3, 14-11.

Farrington's Tyler Liana had a rebound and put back before the buzzer to make it, 16-11.

Hugo hit one of his four three pointers to start the second quarter to put the Govs up, 19-11.

Roosevelt cut the deficit to 3 after a lay up from Inaura to make it, 21-18.

Farrington played good defense and turned Roosevelt turnovers into points.

"We played pretty good D today and we pushed the ball to get easy lay ups," said Van Hugo.

Roosevelt's Isaiah Visoria made a buzzer beating lay up to trail, 34-29 going into halftime.

The second half made a big difference for Farrington, but Roosevelt wouldn't go down without a fight.

Allan Silva remarked, "We started running our offense then we got away from our offense. Roosevelt's guards are very good, I look statewide, they have top guards in the state. I told my kids, "When you run the offense, you will win this game. If you don't run the offense, they will beat you because they are that good."

In the third quarter, the Govs pushed the lead to double digits. Hugo hit a three in the right corner and McEnroe had a put back to make it, 39-29.

Valen Inaura scored 10 of his 16 points in the third quarter off of layups for the Rough Riders, but they still trailed by double digits.

Hugo hit another three pointer from the right side to put the Govs up, 44-31.

The Govs used a 9-2 run to go up 53-33 after a Liana put back lay up.

In the fourth quarter, to get back into the game, Roosevelt tried to implement a half court press to pressure and fluster the Farrington ball handlers.

Hugo said, "When they pressed, we struggled. But when the coaches called time out, we took a moment and figured it out."

Regarding Roosevelt's press, Silva said, "It was nice. It was good for our guards because they didn't want to pass the ball. Towards the end they made the adjustment and we got out of those traps."

Roosevelt's Justin Furtado hit a three pointer to bring the Rough Riders within 10, 55-45.

Roosevelt was able to trim the deficit to 7 with under a minute left and their press was creating turnovers. However, multiple missed three point attempts and jump shots ruined their chances of a comeback.

Farrington's McEnroe had a fastbreak dunk in the closing seconds to put an exclamation mark on the victory.

"We got get better every single game. Roosevelt is a good wake up call, they are a very good team" said Silva.

Farrington travels to play at unbeaten Kalaheo in an important OIA Red East matchup next week Wednesday (1/16) at 7 pm. Roosevelt hosts Kailua also next week Wednesday (1/16) at 7 pm.
