The Maryknoll Spartans overwhelmed the host 'Iolani Raiders, 61-43 as they converted turnovers into points, threw it into their big men in the post and hit three pointers and jump shots.

Maryknoll guard Kaleb Gilmore led the Spartans with 15 points, hitting three 3 pointers.

"I just practice everyday with my coaches on threes. In the game I was open and I shot the ball." said Gilmore. Despite his three point shooting and aggressive drives to the basket, he struggled on his free throws, going just 2 for 8 from the line.

"My worst game so far," Gilmore commented. Maryknoll head coach Kelly Grant also said it was very uncharacteristic of him.

Maryknoll forward Joshua Burnett added 13 points and center Tobias Schramm contributed 14 points and went 8 for 8 at the free throw line.

Maryknoll found success scoring in the paint and they took advantage of their size. Hyrum Harris and Tobias Schramm were open as their teammates drove to the basket and they dumped it off to them for easy lay ups.

"Our goal is to try throw the ball inside. When we do throw the ball inside, we will score, especially when 'Iolani is running four or five guards at the same time. But we got to be patient in throwing the ball in, because during the course of the game I have to keep reminding the kids. I have all these guys that want to shoot, they're score first kind of players. I told them we have to be patient and look inside," said Grant.

Maryknoll took a 7-2 lead after Burnett went coast to coast for a layup.

At 2:51, Joshua Burnett was called for a technical foul after he dunk and hung on the rim after the whistle was blown. 'Iolani's Zach Buscher made both technical free throws.

'Iolani's John Lee hit a three pointer in the right corner to cut the deficit to 2, 11-9. However, Gilmore hit a three pointer at the top to put the Spartans up, 14-9. The Raiders battled back and trailed, 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Maryknoll's Hyrum Harris had two put back lay ups to put the Spartans up by 7, 21-14. Gilmore had a steal and added a lay up to make it 23-14.

A little past the halfway mark in the second quarter, Harris was whistled for a personal foul and Tobias Powell was assessed a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct. Both fouls gave 'Iolani 4 free points. Ikaika Phillip hit both 1 and 1 free throws and sank both technical free throws to trail, 23-18.

On the next possession, 'Iolani's Reece Foy made two free throws to cut the deficit to 3, 23-20.

Both teams traded three point shots as Maryknoll's Tobias Powell hit a three in the left corner to put the Spartans up 6, 26-20.

'Iolani's Zach Buscher answered with a three to make it 27-23.

Joshua Burnett hit two free throws and Danny Danbara added a lay up from Powell to put the Spartans up 31-23 going into halftime.

Coach Grant was not pleased with the technical fouls in the first half, especially the one that costed them four points.

"The kids need to learn how to walk away from those kind of things. When people go on the ground, you shouldn't be grabbing your own players, the referees are responsible for breaking everything up, you just walk away from everything. When I look at the video to see what (Powell) did, the referee said he charged the other guy, but my player (Powell) said he grabbed his own player. But they're definitely going to run on Monday for those two technicals."

In the second half, it was all Maryknoll.

The Spartans worked the ball into the paint and made shots to build a comfortable double-digit lead. Aided by 'Iolani's poor shooting, they added to their lead by scoring points in transition. Danny Danbara added lay ups from Tobias Powell passes and Schramm added a basket from Kaleb Gilmore to go up 57-40, giving the Spartans their largest lead of the game and they never looked back.

"When we play with four guards, we're in our man defense it's easy to get into our lanes and because we know who we're blocking out and we can push the ball up the floor," said Grant.

Zach Buscher led 'Iolani with 13 points and Ikaika Phillip added 12 points, going 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Maryknoll moves to 1-0 in the ILH and host to Punahou next week Wednesday, 1/9 at 6:30 p.m. 'Iolani falls to 0-1 in the ILH and they travel to Saint Louis on Tuesday, 1/8 at 6 p.m.
