Pearl City, Kamehameha take HWOA tourney titles

WAHIAWA-A couple of surprises highlighted the Hawaii Wrestling Officials Association Scholarship Tournament Saturday night at Leilehua's gym.

Pearl City's Breanne Takaesu and Konawaena's Tanalei Louis toppled the top two seeds of their respective weight classes to win gold medals.

Takaesu helped the Chargers tally 162 points for the team title. She had one of her team's three first-place finishes. Kamehameha, which had five golds, took second with 146 points.

Kamehameha  won the boys' team title 232.5 points with a meet-high three golds and three silvers. Punahou was second with 197.5 points.

Takaesu went overtime to beat top-seeded Kaelynn Canyete, 2-1, in the 105-pound weight class. Kapolei's Canyete is defending state champion in the 98-pound division.

After battling to a scoreless first two periods, Canyete took a 1-0 lead with an escape. But later in the period, she drew one-point penalty for stalling, tying the match at 1.

In overtime, the same thing happened, giving Takaesu the match.

"I just kept going forward, trying to be aggressive," said Takaesu of drawing the stall on her opponent. "She really couldn't attack on me and she would get called for the stall."

Takaesu pinned second-seed Alanda Nguyen of Farrington at 5:29 in the semifinals to advance to the title match. She seemingly came out of nowhere. The junior didn't place at last year's state tournament, but she knows one thing.

"I think I'll do better than last year," she said.

Louis was a surprise because she hopped three weight classes to decision second seed, Kahuku's Uilani Freitas Smith, 4-0, to take the 140-pound division.

"It's good, considering it's not my weight class," said Louis, who was third in the state in 125 last season.

Louis said an injury kept her idle and as a result, gained some weight.

Along the way, Louis beat Punahou's Zoe Hernandez, the top seed, and state runner-up in 140 last year. Louis decisioned Hernandez, 6-5, in the quarterfinals.

"It gives me a lot of confidence," Louis said. "Anything can happen. Anybody can lose, anybody can win. It's whoever is most hungry or whoever has the biggest heart."

Louis dedicated her win to the Aunt Sissy, who passed away Friday.

"She lived down the road from me and every morning she made me breakfast on my way to school," Louis said.

Louis said she will likely move down to 135 or 130 when the Big Island season starts.

One of the more intriguing matches was in the boys' 285 class.

Pac-Five's 6-foot, 264-pound Tyman Hayashi was a half-foot shorter and a score of pounds lighter than his Mainland counterpart, 6-6, 284-pound Reid Melani of Sutter Union (Northern California).

Melani decisioned Hayashi, 4-3.

"It was really tough," Hayashi said of competing against the taller and heavier Melani. "I'm not really used to it. He gave me a good fight."

Melani, who is considering playing football at UC Davis, was impressed with Hayashi.

"He was really good," Melani said. "He has good speed. Not that many moves, but he was good at what he did. He didn't make too many mistakes."

Hayashi said he wants to get more work against opponents the size of Melani, but that may not be that easy. The closest he can get is a workout with former NFL offensive lineman Chris Naeole.

"He's helped me over the past few years with both football and wrestling," said Hayashi, who is looking at NAIA schools in Montana for football. "One day, I'd like to live in his footsteps."

Sutter Union was one of two Mainland schools in the tournament. New Plymouth of Idaho also competed.
