First-year varsity quarterbacks Larry Tuileta and Luke Morris combined for 17-of-20 passing for 187 yards and three touchdowns to lead Punahou over Roosevelt, 38-0, in a nonleague season opener Friday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

It was the Makiki schools' first meeting since 1969, the last season before the public schools left the Interscholastic League of Honolulu to join the Oahu Interscholastic Association. When the teams were in the ILH, they played for the perpetual Paint Brush Trophy. It wasn't brought to the game and remains at Punahou's Cooke Library. Punahou had won the last meeting in 1969.

The game went into the 35-point differential running-clock mode after the 7:41 mark in the third quarter.

It was a fresh start for the Buffanblu (1-0), who are breaking in new quarterbacks for 2011 season. Tuileta and Morris are sophomore and took most of the snaps; junior Dylan Cunningham saw action late in the game, completing 2 of 3 passes for 20 yards.

"They played pretty well," Punahou coach Kale Ane said. "There are some things we have to go back to the drawing board about. I think saw things in a little bit slower motion than when they first started, so that was a big plus for us. They made some tough throws. They were clutch for us tonight."

Tuileta, who started, was 10 of 13 for 113 yards and two TDs. He also scored on a 28-yard run. The Buffanblu scored on their first three series behind Tuileta. Their opening drive ended with a 25-yard field goal by Christian Fairbairn and was followed by a 12-yard TD pass from Tuileta to Kale Dyas following a fumble on Roosevelt's first series of the game. Tuileta's 28-yard TD run on an option keeper made it 17-0 with 1:26 left in the first quarter.

"It was my first varsity game, so my first couple drives, I kind of got the jitters," Tuileta said. "After a couple completions, I got into a groove. After that, my teammates kind of picked me up."

Punahou tackled Roosevelt's punter in the end zone for a safety with no time showing on the clock at the end of the first quarter to make it 19-0.

Morris was 7 of 7 for 74 yards, tossing one TD pass and rushing for another. His scoring pass, a 15-yarder to Dyas with 10:41 in the second quarter came on Punahou's fourth series, Morris' first of the game. His 11-yard TD run made it 32-0 with 1:30 before the half.

It was rough night for the Rough Riders, also breaking in a new QB. Keha Wong was 5 of 14 for 18 yards and was intercepted twice, sacked twice and lost a fumble on his team's first play from scrimmage.

"That's a tough way to start after your defense has done a good job," Roosevelt coach Pat Silva said.

The fumble came after Roosevelt's defense forced Punahou to settle for Fairbairn's field goal.

"Last year, we played the No. 1 team in the ILH in (eventual state champion) Saint Louis," Silva said. "We felt going in this year that Punahou is the No. 1 team as well because of their size and experience.

"For us, I think it's a feather in our cap to play teams like this because it's a learning experience for our kids. We have to replace all of our skills (positions) from last year. The last two years, we had some talent in the skill positions. We were growing on the line, though; that's where we lack experience. It's reverse now. We've got the line that's experienced but we got kids that are sometimes shaking without a head, even if we constantly rep it over and over in practice. But they're learning the system. More so, our quarterbacks. It's going to take a while."

Roosevelt has one more preseason tuneup when it plays Aiea next week before drawing a bye to start the OIA Red East season.

Punahou has the luxury of three more nonleague games to prepare for its ILH season opener against Iolani.
