Hilo Vikings

Head coach/Offensive coordinator: Chris Todd (1st season)
Defensive coordinator: Maui Ramos

Players to watch: DL/OL Tyson Kaniaupio (6-1, 285, Sr.), S/WR Koa Akui (5-10, 165, Sr.), QB/S Ricky Mamone (5-8, 160, Jr.), LB/RB Kenan Freeman (5-6, 180, So.)

Coach's words: "We have continuity with the returning starters through our state championship season in 2019. They're going to take on a lot of leadership if we're going to have sustained success; I'm confident in this group. They're working hard and I like our senior leadership this season. There's a lot of question marks statewide, but we're trying to focus on ourselves. We're going to have to find a few answers here and there. We have to rely on our folks to play different roles." - Chris Todd

SL's take: Todd, a 2006 Hilo High graduate and legislator in the State House of Representatives, takes over the reins of the defending D1 state champions this fall after former coach Kaeo Drummondo resigned following the 2019 season and eventually became the school's new athletic director a year later. Todd has been an assistant at his alma mater since 2010 and the OC since 2016. He will lean heavily on Kaniaupio - a three-year varsity player and First Team All-Hawaii DL as a sophomore, when he registered 14 1/2 TFLs and four sacks - to provide the much of the muscle in the trenches, as well as overall team leadership. Todd is also high on Akui, who he calls an under-the-radar player, but potential the best DB in the league. The Vikings lost Lyle Silva, their leading rusher from 2019, who moved to Utah, but players up from a strong JV team should help alleviate his departure. Hilo has won 23 consecutive games in BIIF play dating back to the 2017 season. Expect the Vikings to hoist their eighth straight league title before it faces a number of formidable contenders in the state tournament - including, for the first time, Lahainaluna.
