Offensive Player of the Year: Kini McMillan, Mililani, QB, Jr.
The 6-foot, 185-pound McMillan orchestrated a masterful junior season that saw him throw for 3,521 yards and 42 touchdowns while completing better than 68 percent of his passes. McMillan was intercepted only six times on the year and averaged 9.6 yards per attempt. He also averaged 5.5 yards per rush and totaled 575 yards rushing with another 11 touchdowns on the ground. After missing parts of both his freshman and sophomore seasons due to injuries, McMillan started every game in 2023 for the Trojans, who went 11-2 overall, and led them to an OIA championship and a state runner-up finish.
Defensive Player of the Year: Kaimana Carvalho, Kahuku, DB, Jr.
One game certainly doesn't define any player, but what Carvalho did in a week 2 win over Saint Louis was eye-opening to any observer. Carvalho recorded a staggering five interceptions against the Crusaders, including one that he returned for a touchdown. He also broke-up another pass and tallied three tackles in the win. Carvalho went on to finish with eight picks on the year, along with two forced fumbles to lead the Red Raiders' secondary. Kahuku held opponents to only 14.2 points per game on its way to a 12-2 overall record and its 11th state title in program history.
Coach of the Year: Sterling Carvalho, Kahuku
Despite the loss of a bevy of playmakers to graduation a year ago, Kahuku reloaded and refocused with a new core of impact players in 2023. Carvalho and his coaching staff meshed in new talent that transferred from other schools with homegrown players who worked their way up the depth chart over the years. The result was the third consecutive Open Division state crown for the Red Raiders, who took on two of the nation's top teams in Mater Dei and St. John Bosco in back-to-back weeks. A 30-23 win over Bosco gave Kahuku national notoriety. It rebounded from a loss to Mililani in the OIA title game with a win when the teams faced off for the state championship three weeks later.
