FINAL  1   2   3   4   5
KSK (10-5) 24 25 28 25 - 3
IOL (10-6) 26 23 26 20 - 1

Kainoa Wade put down 32 kills as No. 3 Kamehameha-Kapalama broke away in the fourth set to spoil No. 2 Iolani's senior night 24-26, 25-23, 28-26, 25-20 in the ILH Division I regular season finale at the Father Kenneth A. Bray Athletic Center Friday.

Wade, a University of Hawaii commit, added five blocks and a service ace. Sophomore Kawai Koahou piloted the attack with 52 assists to help the Warriors bounce back from a three-set sweep against Punahou (10-0) and finished 7-3 in the standings.

"That's a really good guy, he's a good human and he played a great game tonight. I loved it, it was great to see him ball," Wade said of Koahou.

"Kawai stepped up for our senior Brayden Van Kuren and he was running a really good offense for us. He's fearless. He will set the middle when you least expect it and he's a firecracker on that court as a setter. His serves carried us," Kamehameha coach Sava Agpoon said.

The tiebreaker game for the second seed and first-round bye in the double-elimination postseason tournament will be held on Monday, Apr. 15 at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium at 6 p.m.

"We know they're going to come back better. Hopefully we get everyone back healthy and it was a fun night," Wade said.

Shaun Nakao led Iolani (7-3) with 17 kills, a block, and an ace. Waipehe Winchester added 14 kills and an ace, and Jackson Dempster chipped in 10 kills and three blocks. Setters Bryson Leong and Oliver Fujikake split time for 23 and 17 assists respectively.

Iolani led for most of the first set until Kamehameha tied it at 19 and took a two point lead following Raider miscues. The teams went through three lead changes until Christian Togiai tied the game at 24 before Nakao landed back-to-back kills to claim the first set.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair as the largest lead was two and there were seven lead changes. Wade gave the Warriors a 21-19 lead, but the Raiders went to Dempster in the middle and Winchester followed up with a kill to tie it at 21. Iolani tied the set at 22, but Kamehameha scored off an attack error. Wade put Kamehameha up, 24-22 until Winchester's fourth kill of the set brought Iolani within one, but Ayden Goo's attack went long to even the match.

"We've been struggling with slow starts all year. It was good to see us fight for once and get us in the game. Once we're in the game, it's a coin flip and we had the good odds tonight," Wade said.

Iolani built a six-point lead following Landon Hirata's kill but Kamehameha clawed back on a 9-3 run to get within two. Kamehameha tied the set at 14 but Iolani pulled away and took a 20-16 lead following a combo block from Dempster and Goo.

"That was just fight from these guys. We've been practicing and we've working hard and the results haven't been showing really. Tonight it showed and I'm proud of all these boys. It was a group effort tonight," Wade said.

"We've been working on that, being positive out there and rallying with each other. One thing I was yelling today was, ‘Stop coaching and play, let the coaches coach.' That's what they did today and that's why they were able to unite with each other," Agpoon said.

The Warriors strung together a scoring run of their own as Kaupo Hoopai-Waikoloa and Koahou combined for three-straight blocks to trail, 21-20. Hoopai-Waikoloa finished with a match-high eight blocks.

"We blocked really well tonight. At the end of the third, we had three blocks in a row and the energy just shifts when you get that," Wade said.

Dempster and Nakao's block made it, 23-20, but Halai Tanaka and Wade landed kills and Dempster's attempt went long to deadlock the set at 23. Tanaka placed an ace for a 25-24 lead, but Dempster found a pocket in the middle to tie it up. Winchester tied the set at 26, but Wade and Sean Friedl teamed up for the block and Kamehameha won the set on Iolani's attack error into the net.

"Shout out to Halai Tanaka, he stepped up. Passing was a little rough the first set, the second set we shook it off and played well. Third set, the serving took a downfall but we stepped up," Agpoon said.

Momentum gained from the end of the third set carried over to the fourth set for Kamehameha. Wade placed eight of his kills in the set and had his lone service ace to put the Warriors up, 10-6.

"Going into the fourth, we were confident. We took the early lead and never let go. We put the foot on the gas," Wade added.

"We finally found that rhythm. With Halai getting in there and providing a spark under our butts and we found that rhythm, we did well. It's all about rhythm for us, it's all about rhythm and being positive, we looked so good," Agpoon said.

Kamehameha took and maintained a commanding seven-point lead. Iolani would get within four three times late in the set, but could not get any closer.

The Warriors avenged a five-set home loss to the Raiders back on Mar. 19.

Loser of the tiebreaker game on Monday will be the third seed and will take on sixth seed Mid-Pacific (0-9) in the opening round. Winner of that first round game advances to face the second seed on Thursday, Apr. 18.
