Chun sets the tone for unbeaten Crusaders; Leong plays prominent role for surging Mules

Tanner Chun

Saint Louis baseball  •   #12    Senior

No matter where he is on the diamond, Tanner Chun is a difference maker for the Saint Louis baseball team.

Chun, a senior and two-way player for the Crusaders, had himself a couple of prolific games last week in wins over Iolani and PAC-5.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Chun made his second start as a pitcher this spring against the Raiders last Tuesday and threw five innings of four-hit ball to get the win. He allowed two runs and four walks with eight strikeouts to lead his team to the 9-5 victory.

"He goes out there and he pitches his game and he's one of those guys that will tell you ‘I want the ball,' and you want that type of player that wants the ball every time and wants to do their best and he goes out there and he helps us win ball games," first-year Saint Louis coach Benny Agbayani said of Chun, a third-year varsity player and second-year starter.

Against Iolani, Chun registered 51 of his 98 total pitches for strikes. He got off to a bit of a shaky start – Chun walked the first two batters he faced and was called for a balk in between to put both baserunners in scoring position – but retired the next three batters to come away unscathed. Chun struck out back-to-back Raiders for the first two outs, then got their fifth batter in the card to ground out for the third out.

Agbayani said it was a matter of Chun settling in and finding his groove.

"I think when you play at different parks, you've got to get adjusted to a lot of things: the mound, the atmosphere and things like that. I think with him it's all about adjusting and the longer the game went on, the better he got," Agbayani said.

To Agbayani's point, Chun set down 10 of the next 12 batters after he put two aboard in the bottom of the first. It wasn't until the fourth inning that Chun ran into a bit of trouble. After he got the first out of the frame on a fly-ball out, Chun beaned a batter then gave up a single. He walked the next batter to load the bases before he struck out the next two Raiders to escape the jam.

"It was clutch. The bases are loaded and as a pitcher, that's when you kind of define how you carry yourself and right there, I think he did a very good job and it shows that after some adversity with some runners on base, I mean, he came back and he just had that fire in his eye and he wanted it," Agbayani said.

Chun's repertoire includes a fastball, slider, curveball and a change-up. Agbayani said that Chun has been working diligently with pitching coach Codie Paiva on finding the right pace on the mound.

"One of the things we talk about is speeding up his game, the tempo of the game and I think he has done very well doing that and just holding runners – that's a big thing, too. He's been taking our advice and trying to get better with every outing he goes out there," Agbayani said.

In addition to his duties as part of the Crusaders' pitching rotation, Chun also serves as the team's leadoff batter. He stroked a two-out, two-run double against Iolani that was part of a four-run second inning for Saint Louis. Chun drew a walk in his next plate appearance and eventually came around to score to give his team a 9-0 lead after four innings.

Chun displayed some power against PAC-5 Saturday as well. He led off the game with a solo home run – on an 0-2 count – to set the tone in the 8-1 win for the Crusaders.

"That's the kind of leadoff hitter you want, someone that makes good contact and is a game-changer. We can go up one-zero in the beginning of the game and he's that kind of player. He has that knack where he wants to always do good. He works hard and his ultimate goal is to make it and play in the Major Leagues and I think if he keeps on working hard, his dream might come true," said Agbayani, himself a former Big Leaguer who spent most of his MLB career with the New York Mets.

Chun's statistics reflect his improvement over the years. He got just 34 at-bats as a sophomore and batted .176. Chun made four pitching appearances that season totaling to five innings of work. The following year Chun cracked the starting lineup and put together a .317 batting average and a 1.32 earned run average. He earned All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu Second Team recognition and was Honorable Mention All-Hawaii.

Through four games this season, Chun is batting a blistering .545 and is 2-0 with a 1.24 ERA.

That said, Chun's defense is center field is often overlooked.

"Defensively he's a leader out there. He can track balls, he has a plus arm and he's one of those kinds of players that you need in the center of the field because he can direct traffic, he can make sure everyone is in the right place and he sees the whole field from the inside," Agbayani explained.

Following his home run, Chun rapped out a single and a double in his next two at-bats. He finished 3 for 4 at the plate with a walk and four runs scored. Chun also stole a couple of bags in the process.

"He has that IQ for the game when he's on offense and he just does the little things that I want him to do as a leadoff hitter. I just want to make sure when the game is on the line, he's one of the main guys that I want to be at home plate," Agbayani affirmed.

Chun, one of nine seniors and a team captain for the Crusaders this spring, has signed to play collegiately next year at Tulane University in New Orleans.

"He's ready to play at the next level. He's just a baseball guy. I think he's just one of those guys that spends a lot of time in the weight room and is always at the ball park, so when it's time to practice, he's always ready to practice," Agbayani said.

Agbayani said both Chun and third-year starting infielder Sean Yamaguchi have been hugely helpful in helping their teammates transition to a new coaching staff.

"These kids have adapted and they buy into what the coaching staff tells them and they go from there. So far, it's been an awesome ride and a great start. You want to be consistent, you want to play well and you want to generate runs and make sure it's one big team and all of us coaches are trying to guide them and trying to get a win every time we go out there," Agbayani said.

Chun and the Crusaders (5-0), who are ranked second in this week's ScoringLive Power Rankings, continue league play at No. 7 Mid-Pacific (3-1) Tuesday afternoon before they take on Punahou (0-5) Saturday morning at Ala Wai Field.

Breeann Leong

Leilehua softball  •   #21  SS

Breeann Leong was at her best in her team's biggest game to date.

The junior was at the forefront of Leilehua's 8-6 win over then-No. 1 Campbell in a key Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West softball game at Kaala Neighborhood Park Friday afternoon.

Leong, a 5-foot-6 right-handed pitcher, went the distance in the circle to lead the Mules (5-2) to their fifth straight win, while the Sabers (6-1) were dealt their first loss of the season. Leong, whose nickname is ‘BB,' struck out eight batters, walked two and scattered nine hits.

"Campbell game, BB was fearless when it came to coming inside, moving back outside — I mean, she was on the spot," Leilehua coach Wendell Au said of Leong, who improved to 4-0 on the year with a 4.60 earned run average.

Leong has been on the varsity team — and a two-way player — since her freshman year. She went 5-3 with a 5.50 ERA in 48 2/3 innings of work in her first season and batted .467 with 14 hits, 12 RBI and six runs scored that year. As a sophomore, Leong posted a 3-4 record with an 8.81 ERA. At the plate she batted .356 with 16 hits, eight RBI and 12 runs scored. Leong earned All-OIA D1 West Second Team honors in 2023.

"She's gotten stronger as the years progress, both physically and mentally. Physically, she's starting to mature and if she continues the route that she's on and the work she's putting in, with her maturity, I think she's going to end up throwing even harder next year," Au said.

Along with her improved strength, Leong has also gained self-confidence.

"She's starting to mature physically, but mentally she's starting to put herself in a place where she feels like  — being as young as she was in a starting role at the time, she was kind of star struck by playing against other big-name players, but at this point she's starting to realize that she is one of those players — so I think she's filling into that role mentally and physically as a premier player," Au said.

Although Leong was charged with six runs allowed against the Sabers Friday, only two of them were earned runs — a result of the Mules' seven errors on the day.

"She'll get touched, just like any pitcher in the state, (but) it's just a matter of our defense providing that security behind her. Seven errors is not going to get you a win most times, but it just so happened that everything lined up that day," Au said.

Leong, who also singled, drew a walk, stole a base and scored twice on offense, held the Sabers scoreless through three innings before the visitors broke through in the fourth. They cut it to an 8-4 game after five innings and plated two more runs in the top of the seventh, but Leong was able to finish off the complete game.

"She was pitching a hell of a game, going after them and even with those seven errors, we still were able to formulate that win at the end. She got roughed up, but we should have been out of the inning and a lot of those are errors and things that kind of lead up to it — giving them a third, fourth and fifth out — so that's not helping," Au described.

It was Leilehua's first win over Campbell since March 18, 2022. The Sabers, who went 16-0 en route to a state championship, saw their 18-game win streak that dated back two seasons come to an end.

"It was a big win. I mean, because this team possesses potential — athletic potential," said Au, who noted that his roster is largely made up of seasonal softball players. That is, the Mules have just four players who play club softball in the offseason.

"That's what (leads to) some of those errors, because when the game starts getting tougher it becomes a pressure situation and some of the kids that don't play that much, that overcomes them," Au said.

Several of the Mules' defensive miscues came in the latter innings.

"In the sixth (inning), we had a few errors — we had two outs and then an errors — (but) just BB's ability to stay focused and attack the very next batter regardless of what happened on the play before, that was huge. As long as she has the confidence to come back with that next pitch, I think that just shows that instead of being selfish, she's selfless when it comes to allowing her team to regroup and get back on the saddle," Au added.

Au made sure to point out that the presence of senior pitcher and fellow third-year varsity player Trinity Cabana-Rodrigues provides a security blanket of sorts for Leong.

"It comes down to the relationship between the two of them and what's happening is Trinity is providing BB with support by giving her the feeling of, ‘If I'm done here, then Train will step in and take care of business,' and that's not a common thing. We haven't had a one-two punch like that since back in 2018 with (Kaena) Nistal and (Kamryn) Kamakaiwi — not saying that they're there yet, but they're very similar in that it's a change of pace. They're definitely different pitchers, where one throws harder and has the rise-ball and the other one throws a lot of spins," Au described.

Au added that between the duo of Leong and Cabana-Rodrigues, when one is in the pitching circle, the other will play shortstop and vice versa.

"They're nearly the same type of batter or player, to be honest, so they're very interchangeable," Au said.

Leong is no slouch at the plate either. She owns a .478 batting average with 11 hits, including three doubles and two home runs, in 23 at-bats. Leong has driven in nine runs and scored a team-leading 12 runs. She has drawn four walks and stolen five bases on the year.

Au recently moved Leong up from the second in the batting order to the leadoff spot.

"She's a pretty steady hitter. She possesses a lot of speed, but also is a great contact hitter. She knows her role and her job as far as looking for the base hit first and she has very good potential for hitting the long ball, too. She's a total team player and can lay down the bunt, which is why she was in that two-hole, but she's very fast on the bases, too," Au said.

Leong was prolific on both sides of the ball in a 12-6 win at Pearl City last Tuesday. She drove in three runs and scored three times and was also the winning pitcher. Leong helped her own cause before she even threw a pitch with a solo home run in the top of the first inning.

"It was to pretty much straightaway center field. She went with the outside pitch and hit it where she needed to," Au recalled.

Leong later doubled in a couple of runs in a five-run seventh inning for the Mules.

"She's a great contact hitter so she'll go with pitches. That one was the inside pitch that she just turned on and it just went down the (left field) line. She just hit a shot right down the line and it was a good hit," Au said.

In the circle, Leong limited the Chargers to one run on four hits over five innings. She struck out a season-high nine batters and walked none before she gave way to Cabana-Rodrigues, who got the final six outs.

"That day she just really overpowered them and our defense was playing well. She was just on it, was money with her location and trusted the pitch calls and had the confidence to deliver those pitches to the right spots," Au said.

Leong and the Mules sit in third place in the ultra-competitive OIA D1 West standings. They moved up three spots to No. 5 in this week's ScoringLive Power Rankings and will host No. 3 Mililani (6-1) Thursday at Kaala Park before they take on No. 7 Kapolei (4-3) Saturday in a televised game at McKinley.
