Rosales sets the table for Sabers; Spartans leaning on freshman Davi in pitching circle

Jake Rosales

Campbell volleyball  •   #22  S  Senior

Jake Rosales is not easily rattled. Not in the classroom and certainly not on the volleyball court.

Rosales is excelling by day, carrying straight A's as a Campbell senior, and by night, as a second-year starting setter for the Sabers' boys volleyball team. His coach, Shane Duhon, likens Rosales to a sponge absorbing as much knowledge as he possibly can.

"Jake is humble and a student of the game," said Duhon, the 10th-year Campbell coach.

When it comes to volleyball, Rosales has been a quick study, to be sure. He only picked up the sport in high school.

"Jake is just getting started as a player and is growing as a setter in a sport that he just started playing a little more than two years ago," Duhon said.

Rosales played on the Campbell junior varsity team in his first year. It was after the completion of that season that Duhon approached Rosales about the prospect of transitioning into a setter.

"I needed a setter and he's never really played a particular position — he didn't start his JV season — so I said let's try setting," Duhon recalled.

The 5-foot-11 Rosales had no qualms with the position change.

"He just accepted it and he just ran with it and that made it just super easy," Duhon added.

With Rosales at the controls, Duhon's team — made up of a mixture of sophomores and juniors — took part in the Men's Aloha Classic at the Hawaii Convention Center.

"We got smashed," Duhon laughed, "but Jake has never stopped setting since then."

There were some highlights that came from the experience, however.

"He had some really good sets, but we got creamed — it was the first time (with Rosales setting) — since then all he's been doing is focusing on it and now he's actually learning to love it and is possibly thinking about going to a (college) to play, but he's leading with his academics, too," Duhon said.

Rosales is enrolled in several Advanced Placement courses and is also a member of the school's soft tennis team during the fall sports season.

"He is a student before an athlete. He's also on the math team and is very self-driven. His plans after high school are still up in the air — he's more focused on his academics than volleyball — but he would like to play also," Duhon said.

Outside of school and volleyball, Rosales also enjoys playing in basketball leagues with his dad and family and has dedicated many service hours to his community.

Duhon explained that Rosales being receptive to change and his willingness to work at improving has accelerated the process.

"He is coachable and constantly working on his craft. Jake challenged himself to be a setter, a position that at one time wasn't even a thought for him to be playing. Some of his teammates have played at clubs during the offseason, while Jake and his teammates would go to the community park and play once or twice a week. For someone that's not really played club and this really being his second year of setting, I think he's doing an awesome job," Duhon assessed.

Campbell went 4-7 a year ago and finished fifth in the final Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West standings. It saw an early exit from the league tournament with a first-round loss to Kaiser.

This season, however, has been a turnaround thus far for the Sabers, who are off to a 4-0 start to the regular season with wins over Waialua, Leilehua, Waipahu and Waianae.

"They are narrowing down simple mistakes and playing point by point every set," Duhon said of his squad.

Rosales has tallied 137 set assists through four matches (9.1 assists per set). He has also recorded 15 digs, five kills, five total blocks and three service aces.

"He's done an awesome job of distribution of sets to his teammates. They're learning to be fluent and one-minded with each other and Jake is the nucleus of his team," Duhon said.

Rosales posted a season-high 43 assists in a four-set win over Waialua to open the regular season back on March 6th. Last week he notched 32 assists, three digs, two block assists and one kill in a four-set win at Leilehua Monday. Rosales followed that up with 23 assists, four digs, four block assists, two aces and one kill in a sweep of Waipahu Wednesday.

"Our liberos and defensive specialists are contributing to those assists," Duhon noted. He pointed to defensive specialists Kaimiokealoha Pascua-Mateo and Stryder Somera as key contributors in the regard, as well as libero Dezi Deliz.

"Dezi is a backbone of our defense," Duhon said.

The result, so far, is Campbell's best start to a season since 2017, when it won its first six matches and went on to finish with a 7-6 record.

"It's exciting to see them excelling in what they love doing," Duhon said. "It's a good bunch of kids; they're students first and then athletes so it's a blessing."

Rosales has been a focal point of the early-season success this spring.

"He knows that he's the center part of the court and his role is important, but he's pretty much cool, calm and collected. I think the biggest difference for him this year is the mental part of the game. He's been a lot more focused on what his position is and he's been more of a leader, working on being more vocal and a leader on and off the court," Duhon said.

Rosales racked up 39 assists, five digs and two kills in a four-set win at Waianae Monday night. He and the Sabers, who are ranked 10th in this week's ScoringLive Boys Volleyball Power Rankings, continue league play Wednesday night when they host Aiea (3-1).

Molly Davi

Maryknoll softball  •   #31  P/INF  Freshman

Molly Davi isn't your typical freshman. A few weeks into the Interscholastic League of Honolulu softball season and the Maryknoll right-handed pitcher is proving just that.

Davi, a mainland transfer, has been the Spartans' sole pitcher through their first three games in ILH play. She has helped the team to a 2-1 record, including wins over Mid-Pacific and Punahou last week.

Longtime Maryknoll coach John Uekawa points to the intangibles that the 5-foot-4 Davi possesses as being key to her success.

"She has true grit and the other thing is her desire," Uekawa said of Davi, a highly-successful club pitcher with years of travel ball under her belt.

"She wants the ball all the time and she could throw a hundred-forty, hundred-fifty pitches if she wanted to. She just loves the pitching game and she's always willing to challenge the batter and that's stuff that's within herself and you cannot teach that. She could be three-oh (count) to a batter and she'll throw a change-up — she has that much confidence in all of her pitches," Uekawa said.

Davi has played for the Lady Knights club team for a number of years. Several of her current Maryknoll teammates have played with Davi on the club side as well.

"They're a local club with a lot of reputation on the mainland. A few of our girls play for the Lady Knights, including our shortstop, Sheyzhelle (Iokia), our second baseman, Reyni (Hiraoka), and our catcher, Pale (Silva)," Uekawa said.

It's not just Davi's moxie that sets her apart. Uekawa noted that Davi definitely possesses the skillset of a talented pitcher.

"She has many variations of pitches, which we try to (utilize) to keep the batters off balance. Right now she throws between fifty-eight and sixty-one (miles per hour) and she's only going to get better," Uekawa said.

Davi, the second oldest of five siblings, began playing softball at the age of 10. She lists her hometown as Allen, Texas.

"I never heard of her or seen her until probably later in the summer, when she was actually done with the club ball (season) on the mainland and came down and started playing (locally)," Uekawa recalled. "I said, ‘wow, who's this girl?' "

The Spartans put together an unblemished 8-0 record in the preseason, including a tournament title at the Glenn Ah Sam Trojan Softball Classic, hosted by Mililani. Davi logged five shutouts in the preseason.

"Zeroes on the opponent's side is the gift of the pitcher, too, so I think that build a little more trust in her having confidence in the defense. I mean, you come in as a freshman and you know about the girls, but you don't necessarily know how it is playing with the girls — it's a little different — but that kind of set the tone," Uekawa said.

Two of Davi's better outings came on the same day in a pair of 7-0 wins over both Leilehua and Mililani in the semifinals and the finals, respectively, of the Ah Sam Classic. Davi held the Mules to five hits and the Trojans to only three.

"I keep on telling her that ‘if you're going to be dominant, that you gotta control half the game,' so a seven-inning game is twenty-one outs, so she's responsible for ten outs, but that doesn't mean ten strikeouts," Uekawa said.

Davi struggled in her very first ILH regular season game on March 6th against Kamehameha. In rain-soaked conditions at Sand Island that afternoon, Davi was tagged for 10 runs on 12 hits. She struck out three batters and walked two in a six-inning loss to the Warriors. The game was called due to heavy continual precipitation.

"It was beyond wet," Uekawa stated. "By the time we were done the whole field was flooded, that's how bad it was. As a pitcher — for both sides — when the ball is wet, you cannot spin the ball. That's no excuse, a loss is a loss, but we were just resorted to throwing a couple of pitches: change-up and a fastball and she gritted it out and we just played it out the best we could. It was a lesson to be learned that they accepted and they don't want to be put in that position as a team."

Davi and the Spartans bounced back from the 10-7 loss to Kamehameha with a 10-0 win over Mid-Pacific last Wednesday. The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run differential mercy rule. Davi held the Owls to one hit and allowed just two walks. She struck out eight batters and threw 58 of her 92 total pitches for strikes.

"That's the true Molly, that's the best I can say. In that game, you saw the real Molly. We have high expectations for her and the team feels the same way. We're not going to win too many one-zero games, but the bottom line too it all is we can hit, too, so we can score runs and it just seems like we always come back, which was proven in that Punahou game," Uekawa said.

Against the Buffanblu in a televised game from McKinley Saturday night, the Spartans trailed 2-1 after two innings and 6-5 after five and a half frames, but tied it in the bottom of the sixth before they eventually walked it off in extra innings.

"We slowly started making a comeback, but everybody is tough in the ILH so you gotta be prepared every single time. We pride ourselves on defense and Molly musters up putting the ball in play and her teammates perform defensively," Uekawa said.

Davi registered four strikeouts and issued two walks to Punahou batters. Of the six runs she was charged with, only two were earned. Davi scattered seven hits and went the distance; She threw 71 of her 117 total pitches for strikes.

"It was a TV game so everything was even more accentuated under pressure and, of course, you want to perform, but she's only going to get better. She's real strong and compact and she will be a pitcher to watch over the years to come," Uekawa said.

He added, "By nature she is a very quiet person and is now coming into her own. She showed some emotion striking out a few batters and killing rallies, but you haven't seen the best of her yet."

Davi and the Spartans (2-1), who are ranked fourth in this week's ScoringLive Power Rankings, will host No. 7 Iolani (0-1) Tuesday afternoon at Sand Island before they visit No. 2 Kamehameha (2-0) Saturday morning.
