WAIPIO — Mililani started the OIA season with a bang.

The Trojans tallied nine total hits in a mercy-rule 13-2 win over Pearl City in both teams' league opener Tuesday night at the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park.

Mililani got off to a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs after the bottom of the first before breaking the game open with a four runs on three hits in the next inning to take a 6-0 lead heading into the third inning. Third baseman Aukai Araujo-Waiau's single to left field drove scored runs No. 5 and No. 6 to cap the frame.

The Chargers were able to retire the side in the third before the Trojans recorded seven runs in the fourth inning to put the game away. Leadoff hitter Malosi Mataafa-Alferos provided the top highlight of the inning with an inside-the-park home run to left-center to bring in three total runs to give Mililani a commanding 12-1 lead.

"We really prepared well for today. It was a good team win overall," said Araujo-Waiau.

Mililani faced five different pitchers in the game and was able to find success against most of them. The Trojans chased starter Kelan Young in the second inning and then were able to score three runs on three hits on Devin Won, who was only able to get one out before moving to catcher and giving way to Jase Lorenzo on the mound.

Lorenzo fared pretty well against Mililani's lineup in 1 2/3 innings, giving up no hits and recording the Chargers' only strikeout of the game — but he didn't start the fourth inning after throwing just 23 pitches. The Trojans then saw success against Caleb Felix and Evan Mizuguchi with five hits and seven runs in their final half-inning at the plate.

"Tonight I think we swung the bat pretty good," said Mililani coach Mark Hirayama. "I think the boys did a pretty good job of adjusting with the different pitchers that they threw at us and just staying in the moment."

Kayden Suma was credited with the pitching win for the Trojans in four innings of work. He allowed just three hits and on unearned run and threw three strikeouts against two walks. Suma had back-to-back strikeouts to end the top of the second and had an inning-ending strikeout to end the third to strand two Pearl City runners.

"I already knew he was going to come in and do his job and hold it down for us," Araujo-Waiau said of Suma.

Still, coach Hirayama noted that there's room for improvement on the mound. The one run Suma was tagged for us scored by a batter that he beaned. He also gave up back-to-back hits to the top of the order the second time facing them. Suma also ran into some trouble in the fourth inning when he loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch, a walk and a single with only one out before his defense backed him up to get out of the inning with three runners on.

"We need to be a little sharper," said Hirayama. "It's still early in the season. Our preseason doesn't give us a lot of innings for these guys to get ready. We're still working on some things and trying to be a little bit more consistent and building up the endurance. I expect (Suma) to get better and get a little better around the plate and move forward."

Pearl City leadoff hitter Ethan Higashionna went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and run scored to lead the Chargers in the loss.
