Seabury Hall basketball • #35 G Junior
On the basketball court, Bromo Dorn is all business. Off the court, it's anything but that from the Seabury Hall junior.
Dorn, a 6-foot-4, 175-pound point guard for the Spartans, possesses an innate ability to rise to the occasion on the hardwood, just as he did at last week's Heide & Cook/HHSAA Division II Boys Basketball State Championships.
The lengthy lefty averaged 21.3 points and eight rebounds in three games on Oahu, which culminated with a down-to-the-wire loss to Kohala in the championship game Saturday night. Despite the end result, Dorn certainly turned some heads with his steady play.
In a quarterfinal win over Pahoa Thursday, Dorn shot 11 of 18 from the field and tallied 25 points to go along with seven rebounds, six blocks, five steals and one assist. The following day, he tallied 21 points and finished one rebound shy of a double-double. Dorn wrapped up the week with an 18-point, eight-rebound effort against the Cowboys.
None of it caught Seabury Hall coach Scott Prather off-guard.
"Honestly, I'm not surprised. I was expecting big things from him and not just because he's gifted physically, but because he works and has put in so much work in the offseason so I knew he would do some great things as long as he was healthy and he really came through. Everything that's coming his way, he's earned and all the accolades are because he's put in the work to get it, so I'm really not surprised to be honest."
For the week, Dorn shot 26 of 61 on field goals (42.6 percent), including 8 of 17 on 3-pointers (47 percent). He totaled 24 rebounds, seven steals, seven blocks and four assists in 95 total minutes played. Dorn committed only seven fouls and six turnovers. He was the lone Seabury Hall representative selected to the all-tournament team.
"He just leads; When he's in attack mode, everybody follows suit and no matter who is guarding him, we know he will make plays — whether it's scoring, or setting up a teammate. It's just the confidence he instills in his teammates that when he's here to play, they have an alpha — we have an alpha to match any other team's alpha," Prather said. "When he's in that frame of mind, all the other boys recognize it and they know they can rely on him. If we need a stop, we know he can get it. If we need a bucket, we know he can get it. It's just the confidence from him just being there."
As a freshman two years ago, Dorn was pulled up to the varsity squad after the completion of the JV season. He played in six games, including one state tournament game, and tallied a 15-point game against Molokai and a 10-point output against Hana.
"When we pulled him up from JV, I saw the potential in him and the blueprint of a player that would be hard to stop in the years to come, but what he always had was — you know how at practice if you tweak an ankle, some guys will sit out and some guys will fight through it? He's a fight-through-it type of guy. Now there's a difference between being hurt and being injured, but if he's hurt, he will fight through it and he doesn't make excuses," Prather said.
Prather talked about Dorn's progression over the years, going from a back-up point guard as a freshman, a major contributor as a sophomore and finally a standout performer this season.
"We were trying to find him minutes here and there, but even as a freshman when I pulled him up, we didn't have a win for a few games and he hit a game-winning buzzer-beating three to beat Maui High, so he had that in him, that willingness to take the big shot, the willingness to take the blame if it didn't go in, so his role and importance to the team has evolved from a role player, to one of the best players, to easily regarded as the best player not only on our team, but also in our league," Prather laid out.
Dorn averaged 13.3 points per game as a sophomore last year. He recorded 24 points in a game against Lanai, 28 against Molokai and went off for 26 in a state tournament game against Hawaii Baptist. Dorn went on to earn All-Hawaii D2 Second Team recognition along with teammate Kobe Garcia.
Prather noted that Dorn took a big step in his development between his sophomores and junior seasons. He likened the southpaw to Philadelphia 76ers guard Kelly Oubre Jr.
"He's long and athletic and a lefty and he's stronger than he looks. He looks like a skinny guy you could push around, but he's stronger than he looks. Offensively, he can pull up left or right for the jumper, he can pass with accuracy and find the open man. I grew up watching the Michigan team during the Fab-Five days and to me, he's like a modern-day version of Jalen Rose — he's smooth, he knows the game, he's mentally and physically tough; He's just got a really smooth left-handed game," Prather described.
Dorn scored in double figures in 27 of Seabury Hall's 28 total games this year. He racked up 11 games of 20-or-more points, including a season-high 27 points in a preseason game against Maui High. Dorn averaged 18.1 points per game and shot 70.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Beyond the statistics it's the intangibles make Dorn special, Prather pointed out.
"I think the biggest thing that sets him apart — his physical gifts are unique in a lot of ways — but it's his mental toughness. Since he's become a full rotational player as a sophomore, in any big game we have, he rises to the occasion. He had a wrist (injury), he had Charley horse thing, but he just doesn't complain. He knows really hard and he just knows how to turn it on in the bigger games," Prather said.
Dorn's work ethic has been steady and consistent and has been a big reason for the trust he has earned from his teammates, Prather, the rest of the coaching staff. Prather's trust in Dorn is what kept him from pulling the junior after two quick offensive fouls in the first quarter of Saturday's title game against Kohala.
"I push the boys hard and not everybody pushes as hard as they can to get to the level that they need to, but Bromo doesn't cheat. He grinds it out. Even if he's not happy about it, he will put in the work. We had three rugged games in a row (at states) so I know he must have been getting tired, but there was no inclination for me to take him out of the game unless he had picked up a third or fourth foul early. When he got two (fouls), he said, ‘I'm good.' I said, ‘I know,' " Prather said. "I knew he wasn't going to make a dumb foul; I knew he wasn't going to expose himself to one unnecessarily."
Dorn may have ice water in his veins on the court, but hardly takes himself too serious off of it.
"As serious as he is on the court — and he is serious and he is passionate — off the court he is one of the funniest, goofiest kids on campus, to the points where you're like, ‘Dude, are you the same guy who was just competing to the bare bones of the drill and now you're goofing off like an eight-year old?' That's what is great is he keeps other guys around him loose and has fun, but he knows when to lock in and focus in and take things seriously. Off the court people really like him and take to him; He's very likable," Prather said.
Outside of basketball, Dorn "played some" football in his past. He's also an avid golfer, but ultimately, Dorn is a gym rat.
"He's a hooper," said Prather, a former Maui High standout who went on to a prolific collegiate career as a four-year starter at UH-Hilo. "He's like me. We like to do other things, but we know what we love to do."
