KAIMUKI—With its top two scorers in foul trouble, Shilee Scanlan picked up the load as Pearl City held off Roosevelt, 47-44, in the opening round of the OIA Division I playoffs at Kaimuki's gymnasium Thursday night.

The West's fifth seeded Chargers (7-4), who moved up from Division II, picked up their third-straight win and advance to the quarterfinal round to face the OIA West top seed and No. 2 Campbell (10-0) on Friday at 6 p.m.

"We told the girls, playoffs, the intensity and they proved they belonged. The win today showed, we're here," Pearl City coach Kyle Martin said.

Scanlan shot 6 for 8 from the free throw line and scored 12 of her team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter. She was 4 for 4 from the free throw line in the final 31.7 seconds to put the Chargers ahead for good.

"I was trying not to crack under pressure, but having the ball in my hands, reminds me of my sophomore year and to control the court. I have a pretty good of the vision, I can get it to my teammates and I can rely on them," Scanlan said.

Kaiesha DeWeever added 10 points before fouling out and Kiaryn Efhan had seven off the bench. Aiesha DeWeever, who handled the point guard duties and guarded Makelah Richardson in stretches, ended with four points before fouling out.

Richardson averaged 16.8 points per game and scored a season-high 31 as the East's fourth seeded Rough Riders concluded their season with a 6-6 mark in the OIA.

"We threw our best girls at her. Credit to Makelah, she could get anywhere she wanted on the court. We had two girls trying to chase her around. Like you said, she's a scoring machine and we'll probably see her next year. She's super talented," Martin said.

Richardson scored in transition to bring Roosevelt within three, 39-36 and forced a timeout at the 4:04 mark in the fourth quarter. Sara Williams, the next leading scorer for the Rough Riders hit a 3-pointer from the right wing with 2:09 to go to tie the game at 39.

Scanlan was fouled and gave the Chargers a 40-39 lead after splitting a pair of free throws. Richardson was fouled on the other end and reclaimed the lead, 41-40 following her foul shots.

Scanlan hit a 3-pointer with 1 minute left for a 43-41 lead. On the other end, Richardson was sent to the line and split her free throws with 35.2 to get within one.

Pearl City got to the bonus and Scanlan nailed both foul shots with 31.7 seconds. Roosevelt got the jump ball and retained possession. Cynthia Ancheta inbounded it to Jourdan Kekauoha-Viena and Kekauoha-Viena scored off the give-and-go as her bucket dropped with 16.9 seconds left to trail, 45-44.

Scanlan was fouled with 11.5 seconds left and her free throws extended the lead back to three. Richardson's contested, potential game-tying 3-pointer from near the top of the arc hit back iron as Efhan grabbed the rebound as time expired.

"That finishing group, they're a bunch of new first-year players and they're hungry. Defense wins championships and we put them out there and I can't be more proud of the girls. They all stepped up when we called on them," Martin said.

Aiesha DeWeever tied the game at 6 with a drive and then fed her sister Kaiesha for two to give the Chargers a 8-6 lead after the first quarter.

After trailing, 15-13 with 2:20 to go, Kaiesha DeWeever scored the next six points to close out the second quarter to give Pearl City a 19-15 lead at halftime.

"The DeWeever sisters our two of our stronger scorers. They had an impact in the first quarter, but when our second string needed them, they showed up and I'm proud of them," Scanlan said.

The scoring picked up for both teams as the Chargers opened up the third quarter with Scanlan's triple for a seven point lead. With Aiesha and Kaiesha DeWeever sitting on the bench with foul trouble, Pearl City made due and Scanlan picked it up offensively as she hit a baseline shot and went glass for a 33-27 lead with 1:08 to go.

"Without Aiesha and Kaiesha, Shilee recognized that she had really step it up and lead us. She's so versatile too, we can put her at the 3-point line, the inside, she can drive, she can finish. It was great and I'm so proud and happy for her," Martin said.

Richardson scored 12 of her team's 14 points in the quarter and hit a floater to trail, 33-29 going into the fourth.

Richardson brought the Rough Riders within two, but Scanlan scored four points and Efhan hit a turnaround in the paint for a 6-0 run to go up 39-31.

Ancheta hit a jumper in transition and Richardson followed up converting 1 of 2 free throws. Kaiesha DeWeever fouled out with 4:25 remaining and her sister Aiesha fouled out with 1:35 left.

"Everybody had to step up, we had the foul trouble, two of our key players fouled out. Shilee, our senior, really stepped up and led the way. Everyone just dialed in, next girl up. Everyone has been ready and at any moment they could be called upon and they got it done," Martin said.

Pearl City hit 9 of their 12 free throw attempts, while Roosevelt was 9 for 17. Richardson made six of her 11 foul shot attempts.

The Chargers lost to the Sabers in the regular season on Jan. 6, 72-31.

Pearl City beat Roosevelt in the preseason, 32-20 back on Dec. 4.
